One of the most important composers for gaming music is Marty O’Donnell (69). He was with Bungie for a long time and created the soundtracks for Halo and Destiny. However, his time at Bungie ended in 2014 with a dismissal and bad blood. Now he intends to run as a conservative candidate for the Republicans in the US Congress. Compared to the crunch he experienced during Halo 2, this should be a walk in the park.
This is what O’Donnell says: In an interview, the now 69-year-old makes some clear statements. He says:
“I am a gamer, I intend to win.”
To be nominated for the election, O’Donnell must first prevail in the primary election against six other Republican candidates on June 11.
Furthermore, he states confidently: He will not lose just because someone thinks they can spend more money, as that person cannot. Apparently, O’Donnell earned well during his many years at Bungie, even if it ended so badly.
O’Donnell was part of Bungie’s inner management circle but fell from grace when Activision took over in 2012. O’Donnell felt that he and his work were no longer appreciated when suddenly his sounds were not used for the big trailers, but rather other songs.
There was then a lot of trouble over “Music of the Sphere,” his major soundtrack. The dispute was only resolved in 2018.
Politics is a walk in the park compared to Halo 2
How does he believe his gaming experience can help him? The politician O’Donnell lets his inner gamer shine through completely in the interview. He states: When he sees what happens in Congress, it is a walk in the park compared to how it was to develop Halo 2.
As it is said, the work and the crunch on Halo 2 almost destroyed Bungie back then. It was something they never wanted to have again with Destiny.
Anyway, O’Donnell says: He will shake up Congress. You don’t need 10 technicians to make a game. You need one technician, one artist, one animator, one writer, one designer, and one composer – everyone must perceive the world differently.
Where does he stand politically? That is somewhat difficult to decipher. He says the Ring of Power must be cast into the Mount Doom. Apparently, he means that the state should mind its own business and let people do as they wish.
Keywords for him are “old family values”, “illegal immigration”, and “the damned state meddling everywhere.”
The composer says that even at the age of 9, he was influenced by two people: Ronald Reagan and Paul McCartney. The nice thing is that he was able to work with Paul McCartney during Destiny a long time ago: Destiny: Fired composer on Paul McCartney “It felt like the band was breaking up”
