In Destiny 2 it is actually Beyond Light, but a new leak talks about the perfect future and Bungie’s new game Matter.
While many eagerly await the release of Destiny: 2 Beyond Light on November 10, new information about Bungie’s next game has emerged. A leak suggests something akin to Destiny 3 that fulfills all the dreams.
According to the leak, Matter, the next big title from Bungie, is not a new IP as everyone has speculated for the past two years. The game is said to be a direct sequel to Destiny 2, which Bungie always wanted to make, but was unable to under Activision. It is suggested that there will be strong references to WoW.
Here’s what the leak says in detail:
- It is said that the “new/old” IP will be a direct story continuation, with characters like Ikora returning
- Players choose a side, Light (Guardians) or Darkness (Forsaken) and rival each other
- The leak suggests that it should be imagined as the Horde and Alliance from WoW
- Depending on the faction, players receive different quests or NPCs interact differently with them – most activities are playable for everyone
- The Eliksni, also known as Fallen, will be added as a new playable race and will be supplemented by “Tiger Man” in the future
- The concept is already set, similar to Destiny there will be PvE and PvP, but also large PvEvP areas where the two factions compete for dominance (not as a separate Gambit mode)
- This large project is made possible by NetEase, who invested 100 million dollars, and Microsoft, who provide cloud servers – Bungie retains complete control over project code name Matter
- The game is also expected to run on mobile devices, functioning as a battle royale offshoot
A release of “Destiny 3” is planned for as early as 2025.

Where is the information coming from? The source of all information is 4Chan. There, a supposed Bungie employee chatted about Matter on November 5, 2020.
The leak has since gone through social media:
The leak sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
We strongly assume that there is nothing to this leak. Everything sounds like the dream of a Destiny player describing their ideal game.
This is how fantasy and reality intertwine: The leaker cleverly intertwines real information, thus creating at least the semblance of actual facts.
- In 2018, Bungie actually received an investment of 100 million dollars from the Chinese giant NetEase. The mobile market in Asia has been booming for years, so a Destiny BR sounds enticing.
- Recently there were rumors that Bungie was in negotiations with Microsoft – but these turned out to be false.
- Activision and Bungie had different visions for the Destiny IP – after the split, it was said that Bungie could now make the game they always wanted.
- With Beyond Light, a trilogy begins on November 10 that is supposed to end in the battle between Light and Darkness in 2022 – so a release of “Destiny 3” in 2025 seems realistic.
- This gives the Guardian access to Stasis, the first Darkness power, and further new elements are expected to follow.
- Even tiny info snippets from Luke Smith, like the “Non-Ghosts” are incorporated into the leak.
Many of the details in the leak have been picked up by players somewhere, somehow.
This is where exaggeration becomes evident: Some of the alleged facts completely contradict reality:
- We know from real job postings from Bungie that the setting of the new game is to be in the fantasy realm, not in a sci-fi setting.
- Regarding Matter, it is supposed to be a completely new IP that stands on its own.
- Such a project, as described above, would likely exceed the framework of the 100 million dollars mentioned as funding.
Overall, superlatives dominate the leak. Everything is described as “perfect” or “huge”. And the goal of “surpassing WoW as the biggest MMO in the world” is ambitious.
