The MOBA League of Legends (LoL) has announced a huge change. The stone-carved level cap of 30 is going away. LoL will switch to a reward structure similar to Overwatch starting in November.
Riot won’t like to hear it, but their colossal MOBA League of Legends is gradually losing relevance. While it is still highly regarded by players, it feels like it was once more popular. The external perception is diminishing.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why. Some say: LoL has become too “rigid.” Others say: Overwatch is strong competition. They are fighting with LoL for the top spot in Korean PC bangs, where PUBG has also entered the fray.
No question: Other games from different genres are catching up to LoL and competing for the throne.
Changes to the Level Cap in LoL: Runes for Free, More Rewards When Leveling Up
In Riot’s latest video, Lead Producer New001 presents changes to LoL. They want to “solve fundamental problems that have plagued LoL for years.”
In this pre-season, some of the most significant changes in the history of League of Legends are coming.
Since May, we have known that runes will soon be free, but that’s not all.
Apparently, Riot has realized: If we do this, we can take it a step further and remove the level cap of 30. Additionally, we will merge experience points and blue essence as currency.

In the future, players in LoL will be able to level beyond 30 and will receive a reward with each level up, a capsule. There will also be special rewards for certain “milestones.”
The capsules contain champion shards and blue essences – for the milestones, there will be gemstones or rare emotes.

In November 2017, many things will change in LoL
The current normal game currency, experience points, will be merged with “blue essences” – this will be the new universal currency that can be used to buy everything that could previously be bought for experience points or blue essences. Prices in the shop will remain the same.
You can read the exact details of these changes here at Riot in German. All of this is planned for November 2017, when the preseason begins.
