One of the biggest highlights of 2025 for MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen will be the anime Lazarus. It is a series for which the director Shinichiro Watanabe is responsible. He is particularly known for two very special anime series.
The year 2025 promises exciting series for anime fans again. I personally am especially looking forward to the 2nd seasons of The Apothecary’s Diaries and Dandadan. Both animes have been among my favorite series in recent years. However, among the newcomers, there is especially one series that has my full attention.
Lazarus is set to premiere on April 5, 2025. It is a series from the legendary director Shinichiro Watanabe. The Japanese has already been responsible for the two series Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
Cowboy Bebop is the first anime I watched that strikes a much more adult tone. After my time in the RTL-2 midday program, which featured animes like Naruto aimed at a younger audience, I discovered Cowboy Bebop on MTV.
The anime impressed me so much with its soundtrack and art style that it is one of the best sci-fi animes for me – which nearly 2 million other viewers also agree on (via My Anime List).
All the more I am excited that Lazarus seems to head in the same direction. Because in terms of story, it feels like a successor to Cowboy Bebop, but with influences from Cyberpunk 2077 – one of my favorite games, which I love especially for its futuristic world and neon colors.

Lazarus seems to be a mix of Cowboy Bebop and Cyberpunk 2077
The anime is set in 2052. In this world, there is peace, thanks to a medication called Hapna. It was developed by neuroscientist Dr. Skinner and serves as a kind of painkiller. However, the scientist had a sinister plan in mind.
It turns out that Hapna was merely a trick and leads to the patient’s death three years after consumption. Therefore, humanity is trying to obtain the only vaccine which is in the possession of the missing Dr. Skinner. Lazarus, a team of only 5 agents, is supposed to track down the scientist and save humanity with the medication.
Just the story alone makes me curious about how the anime will end. There will probably be exciting chases and a rough humor, as was the case in Cowboy Bebop. The art style and music from the trailer also immediately give me the feeling that it is a continuation of the cult anime.
Even the blunt humor is exactly my style. The shooting scene where the protagonist responds to the call of FBI
with Lazarus
and the subsequent reaction is simply hilarious.
However, those who want to watch Lazarus will have to wait a little longer. The premiere will take place on April 5, 2025, at midnight on Adult Swim. This is an American television channel. The next day, the anime will be available on the streaming service Max.
