The Twitch streamer Felix “xQc” Lengyel currently entertains an average of 71,149 viewers with his live streams. He plays Fortnite, Mario Kart, or League of Legends. However, he broke his record not while playing an amazing game, but simply by staring at a well-known website.
How did xQc break his viewer record? xQc shared his screen during the stream and displayed a subreddit. For about 7 hours, the streamer stared at the subreddit along with his viewers.
At one point, he even reached 274,545 viewers, a new record for the streamer, as xQc’s previous record stood at 222,720 viewers.
Otherwise, Lengyel was more known for frequently getting banned. He has already been banned five times from the live streaming platform.
Why was the subreddit so interesting?
It’s about the subreddit r/place, which brought a fun feature back to life on April 1st. Reddit users were allowed to place one pixel on a canvas every 5 minutes, which was displayed in the subreddit throughout.
The event first took place in 2017 and since then, users have wanted the fun to return. More than 1 million Reddit users participated back then, and over 16 million pixels were placed.
Some streamers and communities teamed up for this year’s event to create various artworks. For example, small “Among Us” characters were spread everywhere, or nationalities were represented in the form of flags.
The action was so successful that it was extended multiple times and the available space on the canvas was increased.
On the night of April 5th, the spectacle ended, and countless pixels were placed on the 1,440 × 5,730 large canvas. You can view a complete timelapse of the event in this reddit post:
xQc let his viewers pixel animals, anime, and butts
What did xQc do in the subreddit? While he watched what was happening in the subreddit, he also sent his viewers there to place pixels with him (via Twitch). He first innocently let a cow with a rainbow be pixelated while cheering on his viewers.
Then xQc proceeded to have viewers pixel anime characters before he had a “brilliant idea.” Lengyel had a larger area colored black to immortalize the first butt of a gaming character, who was still well-dressed in a pink, form-fitting suit.
Later in the stream, he chose another butt, that of 2B from NieR:Automata. This one was quite naked and was to be placed over a French flag. However, before the masterpiece could be finally placed, the subreddit mods intervened, and the butt was censored 2 times with large black areas.
You can see the streamer’s disappointment in this Twitch clip:
This action from xQc caused a stir in the subreddit and on other platforms. Many deemed the chosen image inappropriate and complained that xQc was destroying existing works with his images.
However, the streamer only saw the fun behind it: “I enjoyed it. I think it’s funny. (…) I think it was fun for everyone, everyone could create something. (…) I thought it was just a canvas for fun, on a fun website.” He added that he did not want to offend or hurt anyone.
What about you? Did you also participate in the action on reddit and were you able to immortalize a small image? What do you think of the event? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
