Although Diablo 4 has made it to Steam, you can also find the biggest rival of the A-RPG there – and it boasts a solid 93% positive Steam reviews. Now Grim Dawn has announced Patch 1.2, with what they claim to be the most extensive
adjustments yet.
What is Grim Dawn? Grim Dawn is an A-RPG hack’n’slay from Crate Entertainment. It was released in 2016, at the time of Diablo 3. Even back then, it was seen as an alternative to the Blizzard game, and in 2023 it can stand up to Diablo 4.
At MeinMMO, it is also the top pick when it comes to alternatives for Diablo 4:

What is Grim Dawn about? At the center of the story are the so-called Aetherials. They destroy the game world, which forces its inhabitants further back. You are supposed to help in the war against the Aetherials, and your arrival marks a turning point in the confrontation:
An Aetherial once took possession of you, you survived it, and now you are set on saving your world.

Is Grim Dawn still being developed? For 2024, developer Crate Entertainment has announced a new DLC named Fangs of Asterkarn. About the Patch 1.2.0.0, which will be released on November 16, the team writes in the patch notes:
V1.2 is undoubtedly an update created with a lot of love, which will usher in the next era of Grim Dawn before Fangs of Asterkarn is released in 2024!
Crate Entertainment, 11.11.2023 via Steam
So, Grim Dawn will continue to be supported and supplied with new content.
Why is Grim Dawn a major rival for Diablo 4? Grim Dawn and already Diablo 3, now also Diablo 4, are very similar – among other things, as they belong to the same genre and are pay-to-play. Gameplay-wise, the two games are comparable: Grim Dawn offers fighting against constant waves of enemies, and implements the principle well. Grim Dawn also shines with a good story, many quests, and coop with PvP.
On Steam, Grim Dawn currently has a review score of 93% based on a total of 86,918 reviews since release. 72,543 reviews, about 83% of all reviews, are even “very positive”. Those are very good numbers for Steam, indicating a very satisfactory product.
In terms of player numbers, Grim Dawn cannot hold a candle to Diablo, but it is the best alternative for those who simply want a slightly different setting.
