Video games have been pushed to the background on Twitch for some time now. The streamer sodapoppin even goes so far as to say that you cannot grow with them. Other content is better suited for that.
This is the situation:
- Originally, Twitch was created as a platform where streamers can show live how they play video games.
- However, there are now many categories for other activities, such as Just Chatting or the “Hot Tub” streams that emerged in 2021.
- The streamer sodapoppin even explains that video games on the platform are no longer important if you want to grow.
Who is the streamer? sodapoppin has become known as an MMORPG streamer and continues to mostly showcase World of Warcraft on Twitch. He is currently ranked 45th in the follower rankings on the platform (via sullygnome.com).
In one of his recent streams, he explained that video games hardly play a role for streamers anymore. It was about the release of the new Monster Hunter Rise, which, despite its supposed size, hardly finds an audience on Twitch. He explains:
“How big is the game on Twitch? To be honest, it doesn’t matter anymore. The Just Chatting section is just so damn big. That’s all that counts on Twitch. You can’t grow as a streamer on Twitch if you show games.”
Those who decide to show games are not making a business decision, but a personal one. From a business perspective, it is not worth it to play Monster Hunter. Here you can see the full clip:
Television is the new meta – video games in second place
This is currently happening on Twitch: The “Just Chatting” section is currently by far the strongest category on Twitch with over 63 million viewer hours. In 2nd place is League of Legends with just over 44 million (via sullygnome.com).
One of the biggest trends on Twitch right now is showing series live in the stream. The animated series Avatar seems particularly popular here. It is referred to as a new “meta”, meaning what is currently fashionable.
However, this is not really allowed, as Twitch shows through penalties. Even well-known figures like Pokimane, one of the largest female streamers, has already been banned for showing series.
Only a few days after her, top streamer Disguised Toast was caught, who took the opportunity to take a break. He even claims to have staged it. While some streamers apparently assume that showing old series is allowed, a former Twitch star warns:
Twitch prohibits showing content that does not belong to you. The penalties have been enforced more strictly since the copyright complaints and DMCA strikes from 2020 and apply not only to music, as previously planned, but also to series.
Twitch is required to respond when there are complaints. In this case, in the form of bans, which, however, in the cases of Pokimane and Disguised Toast lasted only a few days. Some streamers are now trying to profit from the bans in some way:
