According to Kotaku, Diablo 4 is currently actually in development. Several Blizzard employees confirmed this to the website and even revealed some details.
That Diablo 4 is coming is almost certain. Even Blizzard has given relatively clear hints. However, there are now even concrete details about the game.
New Hints About Diablo 4
What happened? The announcement of Diablo Immortal as a mobile game and main attraction at Blizzcon led to a shitstorm that Blizzard did not expect. Meanwhile, the developer studio continuously spread hints that what fans are waiting for is coming but needs a little more time. Therefore, one can assume that Diablo 4 is in development, but for reasons only Blizzard knows, it could not be shown at this year’s Blizzcon.
What hints about Diablo 4 are there now? According to its own statements, the website Kotaku has spoken with several current and former Blizzard employees about Diablo 4 and learned interesting details. However, the employees want to remain anonymous.
- The planned second expansion of Diablo 3 was canceled at the end of 2013/beginning of 2014
- The team was supposed to take care of Diablo 4
- Diablo 4 has been in development since then under the codename “Fenris”
- The game underwent a complete redesign in 2016
An MMO-lite with Destiny elements
What is Diablo 4 supposed to look like? Kotaku was able to gather some interesting information about Diablo 4. Fans can expect something new – provided the current design remains.
- The motto of the game is “Embrace the Darkness”
- The cartoonish graphics of Diablo 3 are to give way to a darker and more grotesque style
- The game is supposed to be more oriented towards the style of Diablo 2 but be more modern
- Although Diablo 4 currently has the known isometric view, the team is discussing switching to a third-person perspective
- The action RPG is supposed to include more social components, orient itself somewhat towards Destiny, and become an MMO-lite
- Cities could serve as hubs where players meet for adventures
- The team is considering the “strikes” known from Destiny. Player groups could experience a story together in an instance
- The developers find the idea appealing to essentially create a classic Diablo in whose game world some other players could also operate
Diablo 4 is still a long way off
When is Diablo 4 coming? Since the project was reportedly restarted by Blizzard employees in 2016, it is likely to take some time before Blizzard presents the game. Therefore, a release is not yet in sight.
How reliable is the information? According to Kotaku, there were employees who stated that Diablo 4 was supposed to be announced at Blizzcon 2018 – even with a playable demo. However, other employees claimed that a presentation of Diablo 4 was never planned. There are still contradictory statements.
Therefore, the new information should also be taken with caution. Author Jason Schreier is, however, a very reliable source and one of the most well-known gaming authors. How reliable the statements of the interviewed Blizzard employees are remains to be seen.
However, Diablo 4 will almost certainly come. And that Blizzard is increasingly focusing on social components is also logical. Everything else will be seen when the studio officially talks about Diablo 4.
