Game designer Chris Avellone is currently fueling speculation among Fallout fans. Could he be working on a new project in the series? Is this perhaps Fallout Online?
Avellone posted a self-drawn image on Facebook, showing him as a stick figure hugging the Fallout Boy. The Avellone stick figure says “I missed you so much”. There is no further explanation. Now fans are speculating whether Avellone might be working on a new Fallout game.
Is Chris Avellone working on a new Fallout?
Chris Avellone was significantly involved in the 1998 release of Fallout 2 as well as Fallout: New Vegas from 2010. He has quite a connection with the post-apocalyptic RPG series. His current project, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, is set to be released next year. So he certainly has time for a new game. Let’s speculate: if Chris Avellone really teased a new Fallout game, what could it be about?
What could the next Fallout look like?
A Fallout: New Vegas 2 would be conceivable, so a spin-off to the main series and thus a single-player game. That Bethesda is already working on Fallout 5 is rather unlikely. The last installment was released at the end of 2015, and next in line (according to the previous order) would be The Elder Scrolls 6, for which, according to the developers, not even the work has started yet.
An MMORPG for Fallout would also be conceivable. The Elder Scrolls Online is doing quite well, so a Fallout Online could be in the works. And perhaps we have already discovered hints of this in Fallout 4 – namely in the system with which you build settlements in the game. What if Fallout Online doesn’t focus on quests but instead on the currently popular survival genre? Players would have to try to survive together in the post-apocalyptic desert and build a base, for which they need to scavenge the area for resources.
There could be PvP battles between different player groups and of course confrontations with mutants and bandits. Such an online game would not pose a direct competition to ESO and would allow Bethesda to enter a currently popular and successful genre.
As mentioned, these are all still speculations. Speculations that have also arisen earlier. Because rumors about a Fallout Online are nothing new. And as we know, rumors usually contain a grain of truth.
