The developer Pearl Abyss has released a trailer corresponding to the upcoming boss rush from Land of the Morning Light, the forthcoming expansion for the MMORPG Black Desert Online. With the hauntingly beautiful title “Who Lurks in the Darkness?” the trailer sets the tone for the new bosses of the region, but veterans and fans are reacting dividedly to the update.
What does the new trailer show? The new trailer teases individual bosses and their first characteristics of the upcoming content from Land of the Morning Light. Once again, the developer Pearl Abyss shows that Black Desert Online still looks good today, years after its release.
Check out the new trailer for the boss rush here.
Overall, there are supposed to be 9 bosses that you can face solo, but also in a group. These are:
- Golden Pig King – a pig in a warrior corset
- Eoduksini – an oversized crow
- Changui – a fire devil
- Bari – a demon
- Songakshi – a wandering, ghostly apparition
- Sangoon – a giant tiger
- Gumiho – a nine-tailed fox
- Duoksini – a cuddly monster by day, a beast by night
- Bamboo-Legion – a wandering ghost brigade of warriors
The content update should finally address one of its biggest issues – namely the ongoing grind. In the new region, besides the mentioned bosses, there are no additional grind zones.
Restriction of Gear Score in the new area divides fans
What do fans dislike about the content? Apart from the new feature that the focus in the new zone will mainly be on bosses, Pearl Abyss aims to tackle two problems of Black Desert Online here:
- Narrowing the gap between new players and veterans
- Reducing the grind, which can turn into a full-time job depending on individual goals.
However, with the restriction of Gear Score (GS for short) in the new region, especially veterans now feel betrayed. One user writes on Reddit:
- User MaleficentWindrunner:
Imagine having paid 80–150 billion silver for a Blackstar offhand weapon when you only have to pay 15 billion for a green C20 weapon, and due to this restriction and weird mechanics, you end up doing more damage.
Considering that with a relatively high Gear Score you can grind around 1 billion silver per hour, one can certainly understand the statement of user MaleficentWindrunner. It feels like you have taken on what seems like an endless grind, only to be able to use just a fraction of the Gear Score in the new area.
What do fans like about the update? On the other hand, fans are looking forward to new players. Until now, newcomers often had the problem of not being able to catch up. Pearl Abyss implemented the Seasons
into the game as an initial response. These are available for a limited time, as already seen in Path of Exile or the Diablo series.
The problem with that: When the season ends, the supposedly new players are thrown onto the old servers. However, with the current update, new players can now also be useful in group play against the new bosses, beyond the seasons. One user writes:
- User PrimeGamble (via Reddit):
You don’t need attack or defense points for the new region. There will be a new system where your equipment will only deal 10–20% of the damage. The rest comes from other artifacts that you will need to level. So it is really very beginner-friendly.
Whether the update fulfills its purpose remains to be seen. Although the own Gear Score is restricted, new incentives to continue grinding at the boss level arise through further items for this region.
The system behind it promises to curb the grind. However, some individuals, like Asmongold, criticize the time-gate procedure as well.
