The controversial German internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom (real name Kim Schmitz) is a big Destiny fan. He now believes that his favorite game Destiny 2 is threatened by Bungie. He thinks: The game needs a passionate leader. Schmitz seems to see himself in this role.
Kim Schmitz grew up in Germany and was a mix of a successful businessman and hacker in the 90s and 2000s.
Schmitz’s business endeavors often led him into confrontation with the authorities. He was something like the controversial face of the first generation of German internet pioneers: quick money and quick fame. Schmitz presented himself as a shrewd entrepreneur who recognized the signs of the times and had achieved wealth in his twenties.
In 2001, Schmitz even made an appearance on the popular Harald Schmidt Show, where he was introduced as a “sympathetic multimillionaire” and talked about his business and his troubles.
Even in the 2010s, Schmitz was active. He founded the download platform MEGA and emigrated to New Zealand. However, the FBI was after him there, seeking his extradition to the USA and… oh.
Let’s say: Schmitz lives a turbulent life.
But for us as an MMO site, his relationship with Destiny is especially important. This goes back a long way. Kim Dotcom once played a significant role in the history of the shooter.

Kim Dotcom has already saved Destiny – sort of
In 2014, Destiny had just launched and was the talk of the hour. Many wanted to spend their Christmas vacation in December with the science fiction shooter. But a group of DDoS attackers calling themselves “Lizard Squad” threatened to sabotage this plan in a grinch-like manner.
With attacks on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, they ruined Christmas 2014 for many gamers. The worst part: They mocked it and trolled the internet.

At that time, it was Kim Dotcom who acted as a mediator and appeased the attackers with bribery. He granted them lifetime privileges on his download platform if they would stop their attacks on Xbox and PlayStation. If they continued their attacks, he would withdraw the privileges.
This, according to reports, was done by Kim Dotcom to play Destiny peacefully on the Xbox One. He already had two level 31 Warlocks and one level 30 Hunter that he wanted to raise to max level.
Here is a video from Kim Dotcom’s own YouTube channel that shows a life of luxury – with his own martial arts bodyguard.
3 years later, Kim Dotcom now wants to save Destiny 2
Now Kim Dotcom speaks up again three years later. The situation is different: Not hackers are threatening his leisure time in Destiny, but the developers are the bad guys.
In a tweet to Destiny developers Bungie, he accuses them: They have destroyed his favorite game and driven good guardians to Overwatch and Fortnite. They have ruined an army of loyal Destiny streamers and failed to solve the game’s problems.
Bungie now needs a passionate and capable leader who really plays the game: “Call me!”
As a plan, Kim Dotcom suggests:
- Dedicated servers in PvP
- Loot that is based on player performance – with tough milestones that would grant the best loot
- And a battle royale mode – Destiny 2 is missing a trend here.
Whether Bungie will respond to the offer remains doubtful.
The idea that battle royale and Destiny 2 fit together is something we’ve also thought about:
