Artificial intelligence is becoming smarter and is already capable of learning chess or other complicated games. Now, a new AI has been developed that writes an adventure game while you play it.
What kind of AI is this? The AI Dungeon 2 by Nick Walton uses Open-AI to simulate an old-school text adventure. You input text into a window, and the AI responds to you.
This creates a unique story in which you participate, but it is not entirely conceived by you. Your imagination is not limited by the constraints set by a regular text adventure from the developer.
Exciting stories with small errors
How does the adventure work? You start by writing a text in English into the window. It is advisable to begin with a verb so that the AI immediately understands what you are aiming for.
It is also wise to start with “attempt to” so that your actions can fail. Otherwise, you normally achieve success every time.
The AI then responds to what you have written and builds a story that is usually coherent, although occasionally nonsense may arise.
The artificial intelligence draws upon 117 million parameters to shape and narrate the story, according to the developers.
What came out of the stories? In a dedicated subreddit, players post their experiences and stories. Some of them are really exciting to read, while others sound quite crazy:
- In one adventure, a player dies in Fortnite. He desperately wanted to succeed, makes it to the grand final, dies, and weeps to his demise.
- In another story, a player finds himself in the ruins of a castle. As it turns out, he speaks with his younger “self” and it was he himself who destroyed the castle.
- Another example is attached as an image:
Where are the limits of the AI? Occasionally, the simulation crashes or gets stuck in a loop. Then a restart and a new story are the only solutions.
Parts of the story can also be consciously influenced by the AI, yet it sometimes surprises with twists you wouldn’t have thought of.
Where can I download the adventure? You can download the adventure file on the GitHub page. After that, you can start the file, although initially, a few files will need to be downloaded, which only happens the first time.
AI has been used in gaming for a long time
Where is AI already being used? We have already reported that self-learning artificial intelligence can be very successful in games. For example, AI has already defeated known StarCraft players and also a Dota 2 team had to concede defeat.
In both cases, however, special rules were allowed, or there was some trickery involved. Nevertheless, the accomplishments in this regard are impressive.
But artificial intelligence is already being used in other gaming areas:
- In CS:GO, it takes care of banning toxic players
- On the PS5, it is set to serve as an assistant in the future
In the future, it will be exciting to see in which areas AI can still be deployed. Do you have any ideas?
But it can also go the other way. Ryan Reynolds plays the role of an NPC in a new film:
