The classics Warcraft I and II will not be remastered. The developers revealed why at BlizzCon.
Some questions return to BlizzCon every year. Especially the desires for a remake of the old classics, like Warcraft, Diablo, or StarCraft, keep surfacing. Particularly regarding Warcraft 1 and 2, Blizzard has said in recent years that they would like to integrate the classics into the Battle.net software to show fans the original experiences of the Warcraft franchise. However, these plans have now been put on hold: There will be no remake of Warcraft 1 and 2.
The co-founder of Blizzard, Frank Pearce, said the following in the Q&A session:
“We had some very dedicated colleagues who were enthusiastic and resurrected Warcraft 1. They managed to run it in windowed mode. And I played it. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was fantastic – in its time. I promise you, in today’s world, with today’s standards, the game just wouldn’t be fun anymore.”
He further explained:
“We have limited resources for everything. We would rather create fantastic things for World of Warcraft and Overwatch or see what future projects we can tackle instead of looking back and digging up relics of the past.”
In response to the audible disappointment of the fans, Mike Morhaime quickly said “At least not now,” which does not rule out that this might change someday.
Fans will have to settle for Warcraft 3, which received a new patch about a year ago to ensure it can start smoothly on newer computers again.
