The Johto event in Pokémon GO has begun! Here we provide you with an overview of spawns, field research, raid bosses, and the new Shinies.
This is the Johto event: This event is part of the Nostalgia Challenge and is the 2nd event in this series. You can benefit from the bonuses until May 15 at 1:00 PM local time.
The event has changed quite a bit in Pokémon GO, and to ensure you don’t miss anything, we show you the complete overview here.
Shinies, spawns, and quests – The Johto event
These are the quests you need to complete: During the event, there are 7 new field research tasks waiting for you, all featuring Pokémon from the 2nd generation. Here are the quests:
- Earn a heart with your buddy
- Reward: Encounter with a Lorblatt
- Land 3 curveball throws
- Reward: Encounter with a Noctu
- Play with your buddy
- Reward: Encounter with a Karnimani*
- Catch 3 normal-type Pokémon
- Reward: Encounter with a Dummisel*
- Use 5 berries while catching Pokémon
- Reward: Encounter with a Tannza*
- Catch 3 fire-type Pokémon
- Reward: Encounter with an Igelarvar
- Hatch an egg
- Reward: Encounter with a Phanpy
The best quests are probably for Dummisel and Tannza. While Dummisel is sought after as a new Shiny by almost all trainers, Tannza is rather rare outside of events, and many may still be missing the shiny variant.
These are the new Shinies: Dummisel has already been heavily promoted as a new Shiny in Pokémon GO. It has already been spotted and caught by trainers.
Additionally, Pikachu returns as a Shiny. This time it wears an Eevee hat. Make sure to get this Shiny, as after the event, this hat-wearing Pikachu will likely not come back for a while.
What event spawns are there? Almost every Pokémon from the 2nd generation appears in this event. Particularly interesting are the spawns of Dummisel, Panzaeron, Lampi, Tannza, and Yanma. They are quite rare outside of events or have only recently been introduced as Shinies. So you will have good chances of encountering a sought-after Shiny here.
These bonuses are exciting: Especially the double stardust for caught Pokémon should be utilized. You can now also stack star pieces, allowing you to walk around with the item for longer than just half an hour. This is worthwhile in this event.
New raid bosses for the Johto event
These are the new bosses: A large portion of the new raid bosses come from the 2nd generation. Additionally, there are some Shiny checks from other generations:

Which bosses are worth it? This time there are a lot of potential Shinies, which we have marked with an asterisk (*) in the list. So if you still need one of the Shinies, you can try your luck in the raids.
In terms of usability, Despotar, Psiana, Sniebel, and Praktibalk are worth it. They or their evolutions are all top attackers of their type.
For PvP, Togetic, Alola-Raichu, Panzaeron, Nachtara, and Giratina are worthwhile. They are among the best Pokémon in the Tier List of the PvP League. So if you still need a strong team for one of the leagues, you should focus on these Pokémon in raids.
