The development studio Infinity Ward is looking for new employees with a job posting to work on a next-gen project that is planned for upcoming platforms. Is this the new Call of Duty for the release year 2019?
An interesting job posting
Infinity Ward is up again:
- Infinity Ward released the action game Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in 2016.
- Then in 2017 followed Sledgehammer Games with Call of Duty: WW2.
- This year 2018 sees the release of CoD: Black Ops 4 by Treyarch.
- According to the franchise rules, a game from Infinity Ward would again be due next year, 2019.
Is CoD coming for PS5 and the next Xbox?
Will CoD 2019 be released for next-gen consoles? A job posting from Infinity Ward suggests that the new game is currently (also) in development for the upcoming console generation in the form of the PS5 and Xbox “Scarlett”. Next-gen platforms are explicitly mentioned. What could that mean?
- It does not necessarily mean that the upcoming CoD will only be released for PS5 and the next Xbox. If the title referred to in the job posting is indeed the Call of Duty that is set to be released in 2019, it will likely also be available for PS4 and Xbox One. After all, it is still uncertain when we can expect the next-gen consoles.
- It still seems a bit strange that “CoD 2019” is being developed for the upcoming generation. 2019 is still not expected to have new consoles released. Therefore, either the upcoming Call of Duty will be released for both the current and the next generation, or Infinity Ward is already preparing the COD that will come after the one planned for 2019. This should then be released for PS5 and the next Xbox.
- However, it could also be a completely different title that has nothing to do with Call of Duty.
Will Call of Duty have a campaign again?
A single-player campaign is likely. Many CoD fans were disappointed that Black Ops 4 would not have a regular single-player campaign and would only focus on multiplayer. There was quite a bit of criticism for this decision. The job posting from Infinity Ward also seeks a “Narrative Scripter,” which leads to the assumption that a campaign is planned, and the Narrative Scripter must implement it in the game. It only makes sense that “Call of Duty 2019” will again have a single-player campaign following the criticism of Black Ops 4.
However, it will likely take some time until we learn more about this game that Infinity Ward is working on.
