To ensure all players could read his short story, Jeff Kaplan created a particularly annoying quest in World of Warcraft Classic.
World of Warcraft Classic has been released for several days now, and the rush is still tremendous. Blizzard continues to release small promo videos in which the original developers of the Vanilla version of World of Warcraft reveal a few details. This time it was Jeff Kaplan’s turn, the current Overwatch head. He mainly remembers how he annoyed everyone.
This quest is Jeff Kaplan’s fault: Jeff Kaplan was one of two quest designers back then. He is responsible for a variety of tasks that players experience today in WoW Classic. However, one task has particularly stuck in his memory, as it frequently drove players to despair. This refers to the quest “The Green Hills of Stranglethorn.” This quest had several built-in mechanics that players are sure to remember.
What was so terrible about the quest? For the quest, one had to find several pages of the book “The Green Hills of Stranglethorn.” The pages could randomly drop from almost all enemies within Stranglethorn with a low probability. Those who wanted to complete the quest worked on it for days or bought pages from the auction house or traded with other players. Additionally, each page took up an inventory slot, which was extremely scarce – after all, most players in Stranglethorn only had 8-10 bag slots.
Why did Jeff Kaplan do this? The reason is simple: He wrote the short story “The Green Hills of Stranglethorn” and wanted players to read it. However, he knew that hardly anyone would read it if it just lay around as a single book in the game world. So he built a quest around it that divided the book into many pages.
The first player has already reached level 60.
Whether the plan helped is something everyone must decide for themselves.
