In the latest live stream of the shared-world shooter Anthem, there was a first look at the hub Fort Tarsis. You can find the key information from the gameplay here.
On November 29, there was a new live stream for the upcoming online game Anthem. After recent information regarding character customization, this time the focus was on the players’ base.
You will primarily experience Anthem’s story in the hub called Fort Tarsis. It is a city, the only one currently known from the world of Anthem. In the live stream, an early version of it could be seen.
Fort Tarsis, the story and player hub of Anthem
What purpose does Fort Tarsis serve? This city acts as the home for players and various factions. Aside from missions in the open world, you will mainly experience the story there.
The city is expected to continue to expand even after the release of Anthem and offer new things to discover. Currently, it is still in the alpha phase, like the rest of the game. Therefore, Fort Tarsis is not yet finished. Keep that in mind when watching the scenes.
During the stream, the developers also revealed that at the beginning of the story, there is a kind of crisis in the city. Although it is populated and vibrant, initially, there are fewer civilians around.
What does the stream show? For the first time, we get a look at the marketplace of Fort Tarsis. It also shows the place where the player can work on their gear and accept missions.
All over Fort, there are collectibles like books or scrolls placed. They provide you with information about the game world and lore of Anthem. The developers confirm: There will be a codex in Anthem, similar to what fans might already know from Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
What is a codex? This compendium contains all sorts of information about the game world that you find while playing. It collects everything you need to know about characters, places, creatures, and factions. You can expand your codex through collectibles and other activities.
First look at factions in Fort Tarsis
The factions of Anthem: In the stream, we also learn that there will be three factions in Fort Tarsis:
- The Sentinels: They are a kind of police in Fort Tarsis. They wear blue armor and patrol the streets. They are a type of enforcer there.
- The Freelancers: This group apparently includes the player themselves. They take on all sorts of jobs and are likely a sort of mercenary group.
- The Arcanists: There is currently little information about the Arcanists. However, there have already been several missions in gameplay where you had to search for members of this faction. They may be something like artifact hunters.
Whether and how to join the other factions has not yet been clarified. What is certain is that you can complete quests for each group and receive unique loot that fits the respective faction.
Anthem shows dialogues with options and voiced character
Your character speaks: The developers showed a dialogue with a quest giver in the game. The female character being played was fully voiced.
In the dialogue, there was always the opportunity to choose between two responses. These differ in content. One option seems to be rather “cool,” while the other appears to be a more neutral variant.
How much influence does the player have? The developers emphasize that players can change the world and especially Fort Tarsis with their own decisions. The open world remains unaffected by these decisions. This is how they want to maintain the balance between story and multiplayer.
How much you can influence the character and others through dialogues remains to be seen. You should not expect a dialogue system that offers as many responses as, for example, Dragon Age: Origins. When it became known that there would be only 2 options, some fans felt like the world was ending.
Technical issues during the stream: Unfortunately, the stream started an hour late due to technical reasons and also had to be cut short. Originally, they wanted to show gameplay from a mission. However, they plan to make it up soon.
