In WoW: Shadowlands the machinery of death has been disrupted. However, it is very likely that we players are to blame.
In the upcoming expansion “Shadowlands” of World of Warcraft, everything revolves around the Shadowlands. In this realm of souls, quite a few things have gone awry. However, it seems that this change is not solely due to Sylvanas – instead, players themselves might be responsible.
The machinery of death is disrupted: When beings die in World of Warcraft, they are supposed to be brought to the Shadowlands. There, they stand before the Arbiter and are then directed to one of the numerous realms of the Shadowlands.
The anima of souls is used to animate and allow the respective areas to flourish. However, for some time now, all souls have been landing directly in the “Maw” without judgment, a place that was actually only meant for the most wretched souls. All other areas are slowly dying.

Did the players screw it up themselves? One theory that is currently very popular among players revolves around Argus. He was the final boss in patch 7.3 and also the final battle of the entire “Legion” expansion. Argus was a Titan who could not properly “hatch,” but was exploited by Sargeras for his purposes. The players defeated him and the remnants of his power were used to capture Sargeras.
Argus, the Titan of Death: It is particularly interesting that many abilities in the game files of WoW describe Argus as the “Death Titan.” All Titans have some great cosmic power or similar force associated with them. For example, Eonar represents life or Norgannon represents magic. Therefore, it is natural that there is a Titan representing transience in the form of death.

Argus was used for soul searching: However, Argus was not only the Titan of Death, he also had an important role related to souls. The Burning Legion used Argus to fish the souls of fallen demons directly from the Twisting Nether. This allowed Sargeras to bring them back to Argus quickly for resurrection – much faster than with the normal cycle of a demon.
BlizzCon response strengthens suspicion: At the presentations on World of Warcraft at BlizzCon, this suspicion was further corroborated. It was mentioned that the machinery of death has been destroyed for some time and at least affects all “victims of the Fourth War.” This war began immediately after the destruction of Argus with the War of Thorns and the subsequent burning of Teldrassil. The timing would align perfectly.
When you put these aspects together, it is quite possible that Argus played a much larger role in the fabric of cosmic forces than was previously thought. It is very conceivable that Argus’s death, caused by the players, has now led to the chaos in the Shadowlands. Perhaps it was only the death of Argus that allowed the Jailer to gain such dominance in the Shadowlands.
Whether there is any truth to this theory, we will probably only find out next year when the beta of Shadowlands begins. Until then, there is still plenty of room for speculation.
What do you think? Did the story writers think this through well and connect Argus with the Shadowlands? Or do the players see connections where there are none?
