Quietly and secretly, Overwatch has apparently activated its cheat protection. Those who cheat will now face consequences.
Just a few weeks ago, Blizzard revealed in a developer update that they were working on a protection system against cheaters. The software was actually supposed to be implemented with the next patch, but apparently Blizzard has fudged this a bit and implemented the system directly into the live version of the game. Cheaters are now being automatically banned.
What is the new anti-cheat system? For a popular game like Overwatch, there are dozens of cheat and hack programs in circulation, which allow players to automatically land headshots or see through walls. Many of these programs are now automatically identified by Overwatch.
Anyone using such cheating software and getting caught will be immediately banned from the ongoing game. If it is a ranked match, the game will be aborted and the skill rating of all involved players will not change.

Why is the system ready live? No exact justification has been provided for this. However, the fact that Jeff Kaplan “lied” about when the anti-cheat system would go live could have multiple reasons. It may have made it much harder for manufacturers of cheating software to adapt to the new cheat detection.
Players who wanted to “cheat a little longer” were also caught off guard and have likely already been banned from ongoing matches.
What penalties are there? The exact extent of the penalties is not known. The in-game message indicates that cheaters have been “banned” from a match, meaning there will probably be at least an account penalty of several days. If Blizzard stays true to its line, this could lead to a permanent ban of the account for repeat offenders.
