Genshin Impact will introduce a new mechanic in Patch 2.3. This mainly affects the character reruns and the gacha banner mechanics. MeinMMO reveals what’s behind it.
How does the gacha system work now? Normally, there were a maximum of 3 gacha banners per patch:
- Wanderlust Banner (Standard Wish),
- Weapon Event Wish,
- and the Character Event Wish.
The Character Event Wish and Weapon Event Wish swap content every 3 weeks. New characters and weapons can appear, or previous characters and weapons get a rerun – meaning they appear again.
What is supposed to change? The official livestream in Genshin Impact reported that starting from Patch 2.3, a 4th banner should be added if the timing is right. The pages in the gacha system should then look like this:
- Wanderlust Banner
- Weapon Event Wish
- Character Event Wish
- Rerun Banner
The Rerun Banner is the new feature that should be released periodically. It remains unknown whether each time a character gets a rerun in the Character Event Wish, the Rerun Banner will introduce a 2nd rerun character.
In Patch 2.3, there will be 2 reruns: Albedo and Eula.
This is how the mechanics behind the new banner work
If you want to pull a character from the Character Event Wish, you build what is called a Pity. This means you are guaranteed to receive a 5-star hero after a maximum of 90 pulls. However, it can happen that you receive a character that is not advertised in the Character Event Wish.
Then you lose your 50/50 chance, but in the following pulls, you are guaranteed to get the advertised 5-star character from the Character Event Wish.
The Pity of the Character Event Wish is not shared with the others.
But the Rerun Banner will share the Pity with that of the Character Event Wish. You can, for instance, pull from the banner of the Character Event Wish to obtain the 4-star heroes from it and build your Pity.
If you notice that you are close to the 5-star character of the Character Event Wish, but you want the 5-star character from the Rerun Banner, you can switch there and take advantage of your increased chance.
However, it is still unclear whether you can only obtain the Rerun character or if you also have a 50/50 chance, as with the normal Character Event Wish.
This is what the banner overview would look like when a new banner is added with each character rerun:
- 1st page: Character Event Wish
- 2nd page: Rerun character, not included in the Character Event Wish
- 3rd page: Weapon Event Wish
- 4th page: Wanderlust Banner
Community reacts divided
While some admire the change as an advantage to see previously released characters more often than is currently the case, others are concerned that they will have trouble saving their Primogems properly.
At present, heroes that were available in 2020 are only now getting their rerun, near the end of 2021. Thus, some players had to wait almost a year for a chance to obtain their favorite.
The chance that a character will appear in banners again more quickly is therefore significantly higher than without the additional Rerun Banner.

I think the new banner system is an improvement. With a completely separate banner focused only on reruns, this means there will be a rotation of limited 5-star characters every patch. This means you won’t have to wonder for 10 months or more whether a certain character will return.

Great, now even less time to save. It would have been better if there had been a banner for new characters and one for rerun characters that are available throughout the entire patch. 3 characters at the same time is too much. At least give us more Primogems.
