Is Warcraft 3 running any better now? Not really, because in tournaments you have to switch to the old graphics for it to even run …
The release of Warcraft 3: Reforged was arguably one of the worst releases in video game history and led to devastating reviews and angry fans. However, Blizzard announced that they would continue to work on Warcraft 3: Reforged and address many of the fans’ criticisms. This was over a month ago, and the first patches have already been released. But have they really helped and eliminated the worst bugs?
The first “major” tournament at Dreamhack now showed: No, there’s still a lot wrong.
Constant disconnects decide the tournament
What happened? Coinciding with Dreamhack, the first major “Warcraft 3: Reforged” tournament was held. Some of the biggest and most well-known players competed against each other. Among them were the Swede “ThorZain” and the South Korean “Moon.” Moon was long one of the best players of Warcraft 3 and counted among the highest-paid eSports athletes at all.
A duel in the “Best of 3” between ThorZain and Moon is therefore a big deal.
It was tied 1:1 and the decisive match was underway when ThorZain wanted to attack with his army. He had the strategic advantage, as he had an additional base (expansion) and his army was 20 supply points stronger. Additionally, ThorZain also had a lead in upgrade research. The chances of winning were looking good.
However, at the moment of the attack that was supposed to decide the match, ThorZain accidentally disconnected from the game – there was a disconnect and the match in Warcraft 3 Reforged had to be replayed.
The error repeated itself multiple times: As if that alone was not frustrating enough, the same error occurred in the replay. Again, ThorZain had a clear advantage – he had more gold, better items on his heroes, and had a well-balanced army that he could have shone with in the endgame. But just as he wanted to creep a camp, the error happened again and there was another disconnect.
This is how they reacted: The tournament organizers then decided to switch Warcraft 3: Reforged to the old “Classic” graphics to circumvent this error. The game was thus replayed once again. This time, ThorZain was unable to establish dominance. Moon dominated in this decisive round and was able to claim the match and thus the victory without much trouble.
Whether this would have happened without the two disconnects is questionable.
Such disconnects also occurred several times during the tournament, even with other players. This caused many matches to have to be replayed.
What Blizzard has already improved in Warcraft 3 Reforged
What has improved? The patches for Warcraft 3: Reforged have also fixed a lot of bugs that players had to suffer from:
- Workers of the humans no longer colorfully change after being turned into militia.
- Lag within the matches has been reduced.
- Overall, the game runs more smoothly now.
The tournament at Dreamhack has shown, however: A lot still needs to be done before Warcraft 3 can once again become a proper eSports title. Because if you regularly have to switch to the “old” game graphics just to be able to play properly, then that is mainly one thing: quite embarrassing.
Are you still playing Warcraft 3: Reforged? Did you return the game? Or would you rather wait a few months and see what the next patches bring?
