The upcoming exclusive raids for Mewtwo once again raise the question in the community of whether Pokémon GO is actually fair. What do you think?
In recent weeks, there have been changes in Pokémon GO: Raids and legendary Pokémon are new content that trainers frequently encounter. However, only a part of the trainers can participate. Players in rural areas are struggling with this.
The fact that Mewtwo can only be caught through exclusive raids with invitations does not improve the mood.
Exclusive Raids, regional Pokémon, Safari events – Trainers are angry
The new raids and legendary monsters have sparked intense discussions in recent weeks. In raids, powerful Pokémon appear as “bosses” that must be defeated. If you have a particularly strong boss with high difficulty, it is advisable to attack as a group – many bosses cannot be defeated alone.
This is the new cooperative aspect of the game, which clearly favors areas with many Pokémon GO players. If you are the only trainer in your village, you will face problems in raids because you cannot defeat the bosses alone.
Now, Niantic is planning exclusive raids, where players can catch the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. However, invitations will only be distributed to players who have successfully completed a raid in the corresponding arena “shortly before”. So, if you cannot prove a successful raid battle in the arena where Mewtwo spawns, you will not get the Pokémon.
With this exclusion, Niantic is driving many players, especially those in rural areas, crazy. If you have no arenas in the vicinity, you already have to walk or drive far to participate in a raid. Now it also requires luck to hit the right arena where Mewtwo will later appear. Those living in the city and having access to several arenas will therefore have a greater chance of hitting the right arena and being able to fight against Mewtwo.
Players find this unfair and complain about Niantic’s approach and the information that has been provided so far. In general, Niantic expressed itself vaguely in the statement for exclusive raids. How the system will work in detail remains to be seen.
YouTuber compares Pokémon events to Broadway
Regarding the fairness discussion, YouTuber Nick from the ‘Trainer Tips’ channel has now spoken out. In one of his latest videos, he discusses the fairness of the game and shares his opinion about it. As a well-known member of the Pokémon GO community, Nick has participated in many major events of the game and was able to catch one of the first Mewtwo in Japan. Instead of sharing his joy, many of his fans were sad that Niantic initially released Mewtwo only in Yokohama.
“Many people were upset that the participants in Japan had a 100% chance of catching Mewtwo and could catch this special monster first. Mewtwo is supposed to be hard to catch,” he says in the video. Nick adds that Niantic had to give Mewtwo to the participants of the event in Japan, as players from all over the world traveled to this location.
He compares the fact that not every player has the chance to catch the rare Pokémon to events in the real world. “If you want to see a Broadway musical, you also have to plan a trip. If you want to see the Brazilian carnival, you have to go to Brazil. If you want to participate in the Pikachu outbreak, you have to go to Japan.”
Pokémon GO will never be ‘fair’ in this sense
The question of fairness causes many discussions in the community. The fan site PokémonGOHub has also formulated a few apt lines on this topic. In their opinion, the fairness issue is being approached all wrong.
The truth is: Pokémon GO will never be fair if “fair” means that every player around the world has the same opportunities.
This is a GPS-based augmented reality game, and no matter what Niantic does, it will never be completely balanced.
“Unfortunately, Pokémon GO will always have to deal with the real world by nature, so it is with AR games. Considering that, there will always be things that cannot be achieved.”
As one of the most popular mobile games in the world, Pokémon GO will always provoke divided opinions. Some trainers cannot participate in the activities that others can easily reach due to work or other reasons. It remains to be seen how Niantic will implement the release of Mewtwo and whether it will truly divide the community further.
