Although performance issues are currently hindering implementation, in the future you might be able to play Overwatch on the hybrid console Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo’s new console “Switch” has many fans worldwide who regularly game on the handheld. In the future, it could even be possible to play Blizzard’s shooter game “Overwatch” on it. At least, Jeff Kaplan, the Game Director of Overwatch, doesn’t entirely dismiss this idea. Currently, performance poses the biggest challenge that developers must address first.
Performance needs to be reconsidered
Last month, Jeff Kaplan already commented on this topic during a Q&A session on Reddit. He stated that implementing Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch would indeed be challenging, but the team is open to new platforms.
In an interview with Express Online, he reiterated the subject. He explained that performance needs to be reconsidered for the shooter to function on the Nintendo Switch. The problem is that the game’s minimum requirements have been adapted to other platforms. To ensure Overwatch runs smoothly on the Switch, developers need to revisit the topic of minimum requirements and adjust the game accordingly.
Kaplan also mentioned that it is already challenging to maintain and patch three platforms simultaneously. The fact that patches are released at the same time for PS4, Xbox One, and PC is a significant achievement for the team. Adding another platform would complicate these simultaneous updates.
However, he reiterated in this interview his words from the Reddit Q&A thread: The Overwatch developers are open to new platforms. “Just because the game is not currently available on a specific platform doesn’t mean we aren’t considering it for the future. We keep an eye on these things.”
Next, Overwatch fans can look forward to April 11, when the Uprising event is slated to start. The skins for it have probably already been accidentally leaked.
