Powerful warriors wielding impressive greatswords are an integral part of the fantasy genre and have always been included in Dragon Age. However, in recordings of the upcoming role-playing game The Veilguard, players noticed a suspicious absence of the iconic weapon.
Which weapon is in question? The greatsword is a two-handed weapon that has been part of Dragon Age since Origins, and is also standard in many comparable fantasy games. However, attentive fans noticed that the greatsword was not really visible in the recordings shown so far.
Now it seems to be a sad certainty: There will probably be no greatsword.
Greatsword enthusiasts, unite
What do the fans say? When the first previews of Veilguard were released in September, attentive fans noticed a suspicious lack of greatsword footage. Reddit user Randolo_Birnelli asked if anyone had spotted a Rook with a greatsword.
In the comments, other players expressed similar concerns:
- ruascherrios: “I’m worried too, man. My favorite weapon type, I played all the Dragon Age games with it. They can’t not have it in, can they?”
- Eternal_Seekers: “I noticed that right away because I’m always a warrior with heavy armor in every RPG. […]”
In another post, TheBlightDoc explained that they were looking forward to Veilguard, but criticized the absence of the greatsword in the shown footage. “I’m not the only one who noticed this, right?” (via Reddit)
On October 28, the same user took on the sad task of delivering the message: “It’s over, greatsword bros. We lost…”
Players are not angry, just puzzled
Where does the confirmation come from now? YouTuber NorZZa confirmed in the comments under his review on YouTube that there will be no greatswords.
In the comments, some fans of the series expressed disappointment, but many were mainly puzzled by the decision not to include such a classic weapon in the game. We have compiled a few reactions from the community here for you:

Overall, the mood can probably be aptly summarized as: “I’m not angry, just puzzled.” Many long-time fans of the series cannot understand the decision, as other two-handed weapons like hammers and axes are present in the game.
While many emphasize that they are still looking forward to the game, the absence of a fantasy classic like the greatsword is yet another in a series of incomprehensible design choices for players.
