Is the female character with whom you just completed the dungeon actually a man? How much truth is there to this stereotype? Let’s find out together.
What is this about? It is a common stereotype in MMOs and MMORPGs that a large portion of the female characters roaming around in hubs and dungeons are actually played by men.
It originated around the 1990s when there were actually fewer women in the gaming scene than there are today. Games gave players the choice to play as a man or a woman, and statistically, there were more cases where female characters turned out to be men. (via statista.com)
Over time, the number of female gamers increased in both single-player and multiplayer games. But the stereotype remained.
The reasons for choosing a gender in a game that does not match one’s own can be varied:
- One finds the gender externally more appealing
- One wants to try something different
- Because one is role-playing and has thought of an interesting character
- Or one has no preferences and just picked something that looks good
Here’s how you can vote: The poll can be found under this post in a box. Everyone has only one vote they can cast.
So tell us: Do your game characters generally have the same gender as you, or are there differences? What does your choice depend on? Or does the gender not matter to you at all?
