Bots plague many MMORPGs – but in EVE Online, the situation has intensified in recent weeks. Players threaten to lose faith in developer CCP and accuse the Icelanders of condoning botters because they are dependent on their revenues. Negative business signals could also support this.
Complaints about botters are increasing in the EVE Online subreddit: players who run multiple accounts and let programs run automatically without sitting at the computer themselves.
Many EVE players are frustrated by the revenue these bots generate in in-game currency, as this revenue, in turn, devalues the performance of “honest players”. Many pilots have invested a lot of time in EVE and now feel that their game is going to waste and what they have achieved is worthless.

EVE Online – a dying model?
It frustrates the players that such botters are an open secret and that developer CCP does not address it as rigorously as desired.
This aligns with a general trend regarding EVE developer CCP:
- They withdrew from their virtual reality projects in November 2017 and closed and sold studios while laying off employees.
- Among those laid off was almost the entire community team of EVE Online – including some highly valued contacts for the community
- Additionally, CCP is reportedly developing a new, exciting MMORPG.
- Also, the more generous F2P orientation does not please veterans.
Frustrated EVE players feel that their beloved EVE Online is a dying model and CCP wants to squeeze the last drops out of the game.

Business news meets frustration and conspiracy theories
For some players, it now seems like CCP has no motivation to combat botters because every bot ultimately also maintains a subscription and thus finances the game. The player base of EVE Online is generally considered to be dwindling after all these years – the theory here is that CCP wants to offset losses caused by fewer players by being more lenient with bots.
Mein MMO says: This is a difficult situation, as players’ frustration blends with the current business news, and it’s hard to determine how valid the accusations are.
Especially since EVE has such passionate players who care deeply about the MMORPG, there is a significant risk that valuable players will give up on EVE Online.
In any case, the bot problem is greatly affecting the mood in the EVE community right now.
