What is the current state of eSports? What challenges is it facing? In a special of our MeinMMO Podcast, we talk to an expert about the biggest issues in eSports.
The topic of the special: In the gaming bubble, we know eSports very well. It is often seen as the sport of the future, with strong investors and eSports stars earning in the millions. However, it seems that electronic sports are struggling to make it into the mainstream, at least in the West. Is it all just a bubble in the end?
In this special episode, we will explore the biggest problems facing eSports. We will also highlight what needs to happen for eSports to succeed.
To do this, we will draw comparisons to traditional sports, look at the market relevance numbers, analyze why eSports is larger in Asia than in the West. We will discuss the definition of sports and look at who actually benefits from eSports. We will address the conflict of interest between gaming for the “normal” consumers and eSports. The distribution of genders in eSports also plays a role in market relevance.
For the analysis, Leya has invited eSports expert Timo Schöber. Timo Schöber is the author of the bestseller “Screen Athletes”. In addition, he works as a lecturer at the European University Viadrina and is the director of the think tank Esportionary.
