In Destiny 2, a 7-year plan has been discovered. The current Destiny title seems to be around for a long time, and Destiny 3 is a distant prospect.
Here are the new details: Bungie has released a fresh ViDoc for Destiny 2 Shadowkeep, showcasing exciting gameplay and addressing some of the already known Shadowkeep innovations.
A particularly thrilling scene can be seen in the ViDoc from minute 5. Game Director Luke Smith discusses the future content of Destiny 2 on a large whiteboard – and the whiteboard shows Seasons 8, 9, 10, and 11 along with the next Destiny 2 years 4, 5, 6, and 7. Destiny 2 is likely to remain relevant for many years
This is seen on the whiteboard:
- The top row represents the season number, the row below it for the season name, and the third row for the “player fantasy”.
- Season 8 is described as “Undying” with the player fantasy “Stem the Tide”. We know that Season 8 is called “Season of the Undying” and includes Vex invasions. These Vex invasions are likely described here as the “tide” that you need to stem.
- Season 9 is referred to as “Dawn” on the whiteboard. Luke Smith already confirmed in the information about the new season pass model that the ninth season is called “Season of Dawn”. In the player fantasy, he writes “Fix the Timeline”. The Vex may be messing up the timelines that you will need to repair in Season 9. Or does that have something to do with the cycle in the Dreaming City?
- Season 10 is called “Scene”.
- Season 11 is called “Deleted”.
- After Season 11, Year 4 is on the roadmap.
- In another camera angle, it is clear that the roadmap extends to Year 7 on the whiteboard. However, the names of these years cannot be deciphered clearly.
Is Destiny 2 really going to last 5 more years? Years 4 to 7 might also refer to new Destiny installments, but then they shouldn’t be called “Year 4” etc. The Destiny franchise is already a few years older, and the 4th year and the following years refer to the years after the Destiny 2 launch.
Therefore, this roadmap apparently shows: Destiny 2 is running (at least) for 7 years, so now another 5 – Shadowkeep kicks off year 3.
What does the community say about this? On reddit, people are equally surprised and excited by this news: “Up to seven years of Destiny 2? My God, 7 years of Destiny 2,” one exclaims. Another guardian finds this great. This way, Bungie can create high-quality content rather than piecing something together quickly for Destiny 3.
They want to create something alive
What does Bungie say about this? In the ViDoc, it is repeatedly stated that Destiny 2 is to become something that is alive and continuously evolving. With Shadowkeep, they aim to deliver content for players who love the game. They want to show what direction Bungie is taking with Destiny 2 – where the further guardian journey is headed.
Luke Smith says: “Hey, we’re back, and this is the 5-year plan for the game” – which likely confirms the information from the upper whiteboard.
Shadowkeep will prepare Destiny for the next big changes. Destiny 2 is to become a world where players feel that their actions and those of the global community drive the Destiny universe forward in meaningful ways.
The vision for the game: To be a great action MMO, set in an ever-evolving world that you can enter with your friends everywhere.
This is what Smith says about future expansions: Every year, there will be an “expansion set” like Shadowkeep, which will bring four subsequent seasons. The expansions serve as an anchor that sets the new story part. Growth, evolution, and change of these new situations occur during the seasons. The seasons are story-connected.
It’s about a universe, Smith says, that is dynamic, that evolves and that gives you memories. Then you can say: “I was there when …”
With the new seasons, old content will also be removed when new content is released.
Season 11 will be different from anything before
This is what Bungie says about the upcoming seasons:
- In the Season of the Undying, Season 8, it is about the Vex launching an invasion from the Black Garden. They fall upon the moon, and you must stop them.
- In Season 9, things will begin to build on Season 8
- And in Season 10, it is supposed to get quite intense. When Bungie talks about it, scenes featuring Rasputin, the Warmind on Mars, can be seen.
- In Season 11, everything will come together – and according to Bungie, you won’t want to miss that. There’s never been anything like it before.
Shadowkeep is now a cornerstone for significant changes upon which many things will build. Luke Smith ends by asking, “Are we done?” and answers himself directly: “We’re not even close.”

What is known about Destiny 3?
What do we know about Destiny 3? Bungie has not officially said a word about Destiny 3 yet. Previous rumors all stem from leaks.
But according to recent statements, it strongly seems that Destiny 2 will be relevant for many years to come. A “Destiny 3” was not on the roadmap for the next 5 years. In previous months, the developers repeatedly assured that they are far from being done with Destiny 2.
