Soon it’s time for the next round in Destiny 2 with Season 9. A small detail in the reveal stream has fans wondering – is the popular SRL returning?
What is hidden behind SRL? The abbreviation SRL stands for Sparrow Racing League. It is a racing mode where Guardians race on their Sparrows at breathtaking speeds over special tracks.
The SRL is more comparable to a fun racer like Mario Kart than to a Formula 1 simulation:
- Instead of driving (or rather hovering) politely, there is pushing and shoving.
- There are jump ramps and acceleration zones on the tracks.
- Maliciously placed obstacles and enemies like the Vex and pesky Cabal make the tracks unsafe.
In Destiny 1, the fast SRL mode was very popular. The races provided a welcome change to the shooter routine. There was even thematic loot, like cool racing suits, to unlock.
That’s why it’s suspected that the SRL is coming back: During the reveal stream for the Season of Dawn, the planned roadmap was also presented. It also featured the Christmas event ‘the Dawning’.
Upon closer inspection of the image, three Guardians can be seen racing side by side or against each other on their Sparrows. For SRL fans, this is a clear indication that the dearly missed racing mode is making its return.
Also in Destiny 1, the Sparrow races took place during the wintry Dawning event. The timing would fit perfectly for speculation.
However, the return has not been officially confirmed yet. So far, there has been no trace of the Sparrow Racing League in Destiny 2. Check out the hopeful image on the roadmap for yourself:
Guardians love to race
The community has long called for the return of the SRL: The calls for the Sparrow Racing League have not just started now. Throughout the lifespan of Destiny 2, Guardians have repeatedly wondered: where is the SRL?
Players urged Bungie to finally let the varied racing mode make its debut in Destiny 2. For some, the races were even the most fun they ever had in the Destiny universe.
SRL was probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing Destiny. The mode worked so well with the sparrows. New perks like doing tricks to make the sparrow faster and the ability to cut corners was amazing.

Even at the last Dawning event in 2018, some Guardians called for the return. And they were very heavily impacted and disappointed when another year went by without the Sparrow Racing League.
Seriously? Where is it? We aggressively expressed our displeasure at it not coming back in D2Y1…So…Like why would you skip it again in Year 2?
