The Free2Play action MMO Crossout (PC, PS4, Xbox One) from Gaijin Entertainment and Targem Games lets you experience action like in Mad Max. Build your own custom battle vehicles in the post-apocalypse and take down your enemies in PvP and PvE!
Are you a huge fan of movies like Mad Max: Fury Road, where crazy post-apocalyptic punks engage in high-octane death races with souped-up junk vehicles? And do you want to experience such action in an MMO that somewhat resembles the gameplay of War Thunder? Then Crossout could be your game!
The fast-paced action MMO from publisher Gaijin (War Thunder) and developer Targem Games has been available for free in open beta on PS4, Xbox One, and Steam since May 30, 2017, essentially in soft launch. But is the game worth it for you?
Wild battles with modified post-apocalyptic vehicles!
In Crossout, everything revolves around vehicles! You build your dream car from scrap parts and dive into the battle! Together with a team of 3 other players, you then hunt down the enemy team.
Alternatively, you can play the PvE mode and join friends on a mission against AI enemies.
The vehicle editor, a dream for tinkerers!
The big feature of Crossout is the wonderful editor. Unlike in games like World of Tanks or War Thunder, you don’t tinker with existing vehicles here. Instead, you build a unique vehicle from a pile of scrap.
Here, your imagination knows almost no limits. Just take a chassis, add a frame, attach wheels, tracks, hover engines, or even spider legs to the device, and mount some weapons. There is also a decent selection of war machines. These include machine guns, cannons, ramming spikes, chainsaws, shotguns, and even lasers and plasma cannons!
Especially cool: You can upload your best creations to a database where all players can view and test them. You can even download the blueprint and recreate or modify the vehicle! Provided you have the necessary parts.
Not every design makes sense!
However, you must pay attention while assembling and constructing to ensure that your design makes sense. A long vehicle with too few wheels can tip over quickly, and you may have overloaded your vehicle’s energy supply with too many weapons.
Furthermore, you cannot build everything right away. Many parts and upgrades must be unlocked first, and the associated resources can often only be obtained after a long grind. So, if you don’t like grinding, you might not have much fun with Crossout.

Aim for the wheels!
Fortunately, the grind in Crossout is a lot of fun! Just as modular as the editor is the damage system of Crossout. This means that you can shoot off almost every part that your opponent has lovingly attached in the editor. You can literally “shoot your enemies to pieces!”
In the crucible of battle, it cruelly becomes evident whether your hopeful design from the editor can withstand the rigors of combat. Successful concepts will then outmatch poorly thought-out vehicles.
If you have too little armor in critical spots, your big cannon might quickly end up as scrap, and your bulky armored vehicle stands uselessly in the wasteland if you have well protected it with steel plates but mounted only inferior wheels.
Wild chases and fun shooting
The battles in Crossout resemble scenes from post-apocalyptic movies. Wildly cobbled-together vehicles roam everywhere, shooting and ramming each other to scrap. Unlike in War Thunder, you play here less tactically but more focused on action.
Cars are spinning wildly, and there’s constant gunfire somewhere. If you prefer action over leisurely strategizing, Crossout is the right game for you!
The game modes of Crossout – PvP or PvE?
Crossout offers various game modes. Some are PvP, while others are played cooperatively against AI.
- PvP Mission: Here, two teams of 4 players fight for dominance. Either you need to capture the enemy base or take and hold neutral points. You play this mode against bots first and only face real people at higher levels.
- PvE Raid: Here, you fight as a four-player team against hordes of bots. The goal is usually to collect resources or take points on the map. In a special form of raid, you fight against Leviathans. These are huge combat machines that you construct with sadistic enthusiasm in the editor and send out into the world for 24 hours. Other players can attack them there. The Leviathan is controlled by AI. If your creations are successful against other players, you receive rewards.
- PvP Brawl: Here, there are special battles with unique rules. Among other things, there are deadly races. A different brawl is available every day, which is only online for specific times.
- PvP Clan Battle: Here, teams of 4 clan members compete against each other. The winners earn points for their clan and higher ranks in the tournament leaderboard. At the end, there are big goodies for the winning clans.
Psycho-Punks or crazy scientists?
Later in the game, you can join a faction and fight in their name. This allows you to rise in rank and acquire special parts and resources that are not available anywhere else. The options are:
- Lunatics: Crazy psychos with a penchant for alpha damage and speed
- Nomads: These guys are agile all-rounders
- Scavengers: Here you get strong armor and cannons
- Steppe Wolves: In this military faction, there are mainly powerful weapons
- Dawn’s Children: The crazy scientists of this faction offer futuristic items like lasers and hover engines
- Firestarters: A crazy cult that simply loves to ignite everything and worships fire
The Free2Play model
Crossout offers a cash shop for microtransactions as a free-to-play game. You can buy in-game currency there, which you need in the game to purchase new items or trade them on the marketplace (auction house). In Crossout, you can even trade valuable items with each other.
If you’re not interested in that, you can buy complete vehicles that are usually well put together. The parts used are of high quality and can be obtained in the game through hard grind. So, spending real money only saves time and does not automatically make you better than free-to-play players.

Beginner tips to ease your start in the game
- Always travel in groups at the beginning. This drastically increases your chances of survival!
- Log in every day, even if you don’t want to play! Because Crossout rewards you with goodies every day.
- Always complete your challenges and tasks. This way, you can quickly get better equipment.
- Make sure you have enough fuel when you want to do PvE. Fuel is available every day or by taking fuel cans into your PvP battles.
And some more tips for vehicle construction
- Plan ahead what you want to have later and do the corresponding missions and game modes. Otherwise, you may find that the last hours of grinding were for nothing!
- Keep in mind that items are not ready immediately but are built in real-time. So, schedule large construction jobs for when you can best do them before going to sleep or during other longer offline periods.
- If you can’t think of anything for your dream vehicle, take a look at the gallery of constructions uploaded by other players and let yourself be inspired.
- You can test all vehicles in the database. This way, you can check in advance if you need a specific weapon or part or not.
