The release of Borderlands 3 is not yet two years old, and the game was recently updated with fresh content, but fans are already hungry for the next installment. There is good news, as Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, has revealed that they are working on the “next big thing”.
What was said? There were rumors that the next installment of the Borderlands series would not be fully developed by Gearbox (via YouTube). Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox, took this opportunity to debunk such rumors on Twitter. He explained that Gearbox would never have a “supporting” or “collaborative” role in future Borderlands games. Gearbox is the leading developer for upcoming Borderlands titles.
They are working “on the big thing”: Later, Pitchford elaborated a bit on what is currently being worked on, without going into exact details. He stated:
We are definitely working on some fantastic things that I hope will surprise and delight you. In conclusion: If anyone out there has the right skills and wants a little Borderlands action, we are currently working on the big thing.

This indirectly announces that one of the next games from Gearbox will be another Borderlands game.

There was a controversy about whether Borderlands 3 would have microtransactions. This was previously denied by Pitchford, but they ultimately existed in some form in the finished game. Even with another game, Battleborn, he initially denied that the game would ever become free-to-play – before exactly that happened a year later.
What kind of game could this be? The Borderlands universe offers countless possibilities for housing another loot shooter. It would be easy to create new worlds with even more vaults and cool, new vault hunters.
However, the next Borderlands could also be another spin-off, meaning a “side story” that won’t carry the number 4. There have been such in the past, such as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel or Tales From The Borderlands. These games barely advanced the main story but instead told side stories or illuminated the backgrounds of popular characters in more detail.
When will there be more information? Whether there will be an official announcement of a new Borderlands game soon is still unclear. However, since Gearbox will be present at E3 this summer, it is quite possible that they will unveil something there.
