What is the back and forth about? The armor quest in the Iron Banner has gone through a real rollercoaster in recent months, best described as “From one extreme to another”.
In Season 7, Bungie radically changed the way armor is earned in the Iron Banner. Those who wanted the latest Iron Banner gear had to grind significantly more. Many did not like this, and Destiny 2 adjusted it for Season 8. Since then, the quest can almost be completed on the side. However, this also does not only receive positive feedback.
Many Guardians have since been discussing what is better at the end of the day. We want to hear from you as well.
This is how it was with the quest in Season 7 – the introduction of the armor quest: In Season 6, the individual armor pieces were still tied to weekly bounties from Lord Saladin, which could all be completed simultaneously. Once these bounties were completed, the corresponding armor items could be bought directly from Lord Saladin. Additionally, event-specific armor pieces could also be obtained as random drops after completing Iron Banner matches.
In Season 7, you were initially sent on a long, multi-part quest for armor pieces from the Iron Banner, where all 5 armor pieces were unlocked gradually. Only then could they also drop as random rewards after matches. The steps had to be completed one by one and had enormous requirements at times. Progress for each step was only made when you actually reached that point.
Many players felt that Bungie had gone way overboard. Some Guardians referred to it as perhaps the most grind-heavy and annoying task that Destiny 2 had seen up to that point. Many solo players, smaller groups, and players with limited time complained. Those playing solo and with multiple characters could hardly keep up – especially if they could not play continuously.
This is how it works with the quest now in Season 8 – after the revision of the armor quest: Already in Season 7, Bungie made some adjustments to the quest, for Season 8, the hunt for the armor was revised again.
While you are still sent on a quest, this time it is so easy that it can almost be completed in passing – even if you play multiple characters.
Now you simply play the Iron Banner and need to get a few kills with the fusion rifle here, eliminate some guardians with the super there, and capture a few zones. Progress can now be easily achieved on the side. Additionally, some requirements now build on each other. For example, the captured zones and completed matches also count for the following steps and are aggregated.
In short: Since Season 8, the quest has become significantly easier and can be completed much faster. As an example: Even I, who had little time to play during both Iron Banner events of Season 8, was already done with 2 of my 3 guardians after just a few relaxed hours in the first event.
How do Guardians view these changes? The latest changes have been well received by many fans – especially by players with little time and by lone wolves. The quest is now much more pleasant to play – especially in direct comparison to Season 7. Especially when wanting to entertain multiple guardians, one can now keep up much better than in the previous season. Everything is now associated with less stress and significantly more fun.
However, there are not only positive voices. Criticism is also being voiced. The quest is almost trivial and hardly offers any challenges – in contrast to the end of Season 7, where Bungie made the most important changes to the “old new system”. There are also accusations that Bungie has listened to the “crying” casuals and is now essentially giving them everything almost for free. Now everything is ridiculously easy again.
Some also believe that Bungie simply cannot find a healthy middle ground and is jumping from one extreme to another in this case.
