Insiders from BioWare have revealed that an important decision is pending for Anthem. Will the coop shooter be revamped or is it the end?
The inglorious history of Anthem could now find an end – or the game could get another chance. In the coming days, it will be decided whether EA will simply scrap the shooter from BioWare or mobilize significant resources to carry out the revision.
Who said that? The statements come from an article from Bloomberg magazine by author Jason Schreier. He is known for having good connections in the gaming scene and frequently accesses insiders from various companies. He has already uncovered many internal matters from Activision Blizzard or dealt with intrigues at EA in articles. Since he has three anonymous contacts, all telling the same story, this account seems very likely to be true.
What was said? A small team of nearly 30 people has been working on Anthem Next at BioWare for quite a while. They aim to create important revisions to put the game back on the right track. After all, the core gameplay of Anthem works, just all the game systems around it do not.
According to Schreier’s report, there will be a meeting this week. Key figures from EA will review the latest internal version of “Anthem Next” and then decide how to proceed with the game. There are fundamentally two options to choose from:
- Anthem will be scrapped. The project will be terminated, and thus “Anthem Next” will be stopped, resulting in an inglorious end for the game.
- The development of Anthem Next will continue, and the team will be expanded to produce new content. Allegedly, the team would need to be tripled – meaning hiring at least 60 new people – to work on new content. This would likely be a significant investment.
Whether Anthem will continue to exist largely depends on how well the current work on Anthem Next is received by the executives and whether they see potential for future success of the game.
We will likely learn in the coming days whether Anthem will rise from its long slumber once more or seamlessly transitions into a state of suspension.
Would you be interested in a revamped Anthem? Or do you think that the project is no longer salvageable and the team should focus on other games?
