Nightingale has been having trouble reaching players on Steam: Now the survival MMO is shutting down its official online servers. But it is not completely over for the game.
What kind of game is this? Nightingale is a survival game by developer Inflexion Games and was released on February 20, 2024, for PC on Steam and PS5. The game had a strong start, but player numbers on Steam drastically decreased over time.
- At release, Nightingale had over 47,000 concurrent players on Steam, according to steamdb.info, but after a few months, there were only about 1,000.
- In the last 24 hours, the game only reached a player peak of 315 (as of July 15, 2025).
In Nightingale, you play as a world traveler searching for a refuge for humanity. Your journey takes you through a magical Fae world – or rather through several. You travel through portals to explore new areas alone or with other players.
With the “Realms Rebuilt” update, the game has significantly improved since its release:
Nightingale is now taking official online servers offline
This is the next step: The developers announced this in a post on Steam. There, the creators write: This decision was not easy, but it is well justified. Their original vision for the game never quite came together.
The developers say: “Many players primarily use our hosting infrastructure for single-player sessions, and only a small fraction play in larger groups of five or six people.” Therefore, it is difficult to justify maintaining the online infrastructure – especially since the resources spent on it could be used elsewhere in development.
The game is not entirely shutting down: Players will still be able to play with friends on dedicated servers. The developers already announced these servers in June and they were very well received by players. If you still have characters on the online servers, you can transfer them to offline play. You don’t have to create new ones.
Despite all its early difficulties, Nightingale is one of the most innovative survival games of recent years with its ideas, but it just couldn’t establish itself properly.
