Lemnis Gate is one of the most unusual shooters of recent years. It is played in first-person, but with turn-based gameplay and a time mechanic. Although the game received good reviews, the shooter is being discontinued after less than two years.
What kind of game is it? In Lemnis Gate, you play a match in 1v1, 2v2 or local multiplayer. There are various modes such as Deathmatch, Search and Destroy or Domination. You also have different operators with different abilities at your disposal.
A game consists of several rounds, each lasting 25 seconds. In these 25 seconds, you can do whatever you want. Then the game resembles a classic first-person shooter.
When your turn is over, it is the opponent’s turn and they can react to your moves. If an operator dies in a round, they are in ghost mode. However, you can still perform the usual actions there. If you manage to kill the opponent who killed your operator, you can return to life.
Sounds pretty confusing? It is, but also very innovative, thought MeinMMO author Tarek Zehrer.
The high player counts were something Lemnis Gate never achieved. On Steam, only 807 people played simultaneously shortly after the release. But among its few players, it was popular. On Steam, the shooter received 758 reviews, 86% of which were positive. In addition to Steam, the game was also released on PS4, PS5 and in the Xbox Game Pass.
Lemnis Gate will be discontinued in July 2023
What has happened now? The low player numbers are taking their toll. On July 11, 2023, the servers will be shut down. PC players will no longer have access to the content from that point on, but console players can still play locally against each other.
Before that, on April 11, the sale of Lemnis Gate will be discontinued.
What led to the shooter’s failure? Looking at the reviews, there were many positive ratings around the release. They praise the complex gameplay, which requires a lot of thought and planning. One user described it as “4D chess with guns”.
Some had already feared that the large player numbers would not materialize – also because Lemnis Gate was Buy2Play, which is a barrier to entry.
There was an early desire to switch to Free2Play to have more players for matchmaking. This was said to have been difficult already in January 2022, four months after the release. At times, there were only 8 players online on PC simultaneously.
In the last few months, the shooter lacked both new updates and new players. The shutdown was therefore the logical consequence.
