Battlefield 2042 has been struggling with bad news, few players, and a miserable mood in the community since its release. However, a small new feature makes fans happy for the first time in months. Nothing changes in gameplay.
The controversial and widely regarded as failed shooter Battlefield 2042 is currently trying to recover. The largest patch so far, 4.0, was released a few weeks ago and brought useful improvements as well as hated changes.
So far, not much has changed. The community remains critical of the shooter, and player numbers on Steam have also failed to recover, hovering below 2,000 active players. According to leaks, the shooter may now also try to reach a new audience thanks to Game Pass.
All the more surprising is that a relatively insignificant new feature is actually well-received in the community. The probably most popular news in months is a simple helmet for the unpopular specialist Navin Rao.
In our podcast, we talk about the failure of Battlefield 2042:
What is the new feature? For some time now, there have been weekly missions in Battlefield 2042 that allow you to unlock a new skin each week.
With this week’s mission, you can unlock the epic “Balidan” helmet for the specialist Rao. This completely covers the specialist’s face, making the soldier almost look like a character from Battlefield 4.
To unlock the helmet, you need to do the following:
- Get 3 Recon Medals.
- Defeat 20 enemies and vehicles.
- Capture or neutralize 10 objectives.
Fans mainly celebrate the skin, but others call it a “disgrace”
What does the community say? Although this is a relatively small new feature, the community is indeed quite euphoric. The fact that a soldier in the military shooter can now look like a classic soldier seems to make fans very happy.
In the subreddit for Battlefield 2042, you can find praise posts with titles like “Finally a real Battlefield skin” and “Look how good this looks! This is Battlefield.” These have thousands of upvotes:
Users in the comments view this similarly positively:
- “This looks like the Russian attacker from Battlefield 4. This is a good improvement in terms of cosmetics” – caballo_vago27
- “The only reason I don’t like it is that it reminds me of how classes should have been” – Grove-Knight
Are there dissenting voices? However, not all voices are positive. Users like n1weaponizedautism accuse the community of being easily blinded by such superficialities:
Imagine we’ve had the game for 6 months and there have been no real content updates other than some small skins for the crappy specialists that most people don’t want in Battlefield.
And some people clap their hands and call these pitiful cosmetic updates “this is Battlefield”. How low has our “brutal” expectation become? It’s such a disgrace and there’s still no roadmap.

So far, the skins from the weekly missions have attracted little attention. However, this realistic-looking helmet has at least positively resonated with parts of the community. There were also negative exceptions like the “Tactical Beanie,” which many players mocked.
This beanie was one of the reasons why MeinMMO author Marko Jevtic was of the opinion:
