The Kickstarter campaign of the indie MMORPG Oath has ended, and the desired funding amount was not only reached but significantly exceeded.
What is Oath? Oath is a hardcore sandbox MMORPG developed by a 5-person indie studio using Unreal Engine 4 and Spatial-OS technology.
- You fight using a fast-paced, action-oriented system that requires you to actively dodge.
- You create your hero from the seven classes Knight, Berserker, Pyromancer, Cryomancer, Ranger, Rogue, and Guardian.
- You explore large dungeons and participate in 20-man raids.
- Guild wars play an important role. Guilds can take possession of countries and establish a base there.
- PvE and PvP run separately from each other.
- The game uses a free-to-play model with purely cosmetic items in the in-game shop.
A highly successful crowdfunding campaign
How is the game financed? The developers launched a Kickstarter campaign in early April. The goal was to raise $35,000. Although the campaign started quite slowly, the team ultimately managed to raise nearly $68,000.
This allowed several stretch goals such as dynamic weather and activities at sea to be reached.
What about the graphics? Oath currently looks quite simple. However, this is set to change. The developers are currently relying on placeholder graphics. However, players should not expect a “realistic” look. The graphics are expected to look significantly better than now, but will have a stylized look.
This is what MMORPG fans have apparently been waiting for
Why is the MMORPG so popular? The MMORPG strikes a chord with players. What is being created here is not aimed at the masses but at fans of hardcore MMORPGs. Players who do not want to be constantly guided.
Additionally, the social aspect is important. Players must work together in groups. The guild system is also well received, and the raids promise a lot of fun.
Many players feel that the developers are simply focusing on fun gameplay because they want to create an enjoyable MMORPG themselves. There is no pay-to-win, and what has been seen so far looks very enjoyable. Also important to many is that Oath does not mix PvP and PvE but aims to provide separate player experiences.
What do the players think? Players feel that Oath is somewhat like Black Desert without pay-to-win. The fast combat system is something that many enjoy.
Might_Monk says on Reddit: “I hope it takes the best parts of games like Black Desert Online and ArcheAge and implements them smoothly and enjoyably.”
When will the game be released? Oath is set to enter its first alpha in the fourth quarter of 2019, with a release planned for no earlier than 2020.
