In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands players will be able to choose what to tackle and when. Only the first time it will be mandatory.
Leveling and gearing up Twinks in Battle for Azeroth is not very pleasant. There are many small stumbling blocks like artifact power or the essences for the Heart of Azeroth. In WoW: Shadowlands it is supposed to be different and players will receive more freedom – at least with their second characters. The first character must follow a fixed path.
What was said? At BlizzCon it was revealed that the areas in Shadowlands will follow a narrative storyline. In plain language, this means that players will have to play through the areas in a fixed order. Unlike in Legion or Battle for Azeroth, you cannot choose between multiple starting areas, but must follow a defined storyline that tackles one area at a time. This is intended to tell a larger, more comprehensive story.
At the end of this story, players can choose a “Covenant” and join one of the four factions of Shadowlands. This comes with special bonuses and its own endgame campaign.
Twinks are not subject to the restriction: However, this system does not apply to second characters. Once a character has completed the Shadowlands storyline, you have more choices with Twinks. You can then start in an area of your choice or level only through dungeons or PvP – just as you like. Additionally, Twinks can choose a Covenant upon entering the Shadowlands and make progress with it. This is referred to as the “New Game +” experience.
This is supposed to ensure that Twinks at Level 60 do not start “from scratch,” but already have made significant progress for the Covenant.
A second character at Level 60 will already have more endgame progress than your first character who just reached Level 60.
Thus, catching up with Twinks will be easier.
New players have even less choice: There is one more restriction for players who are completely new to World of Warcraft. They will be “forced” to start in the new starting area “Exile’s Reach.” Afterward, they must quest in “Battle for Azeroth” before they can enter the Shadowlands.
The developers made this decision for several reasons. On the one hand, Battle for Azeroth is the latest expansion and has the most modern leveling flow. On the other hand, Battle for Azeroth is also the current storyline and should prepare players for what will happen in the Shadowlands.
Existing players and second characters do not have to go through this. They can quest wherever they like.
