In World of Warcraft, a deadly plague has broken out. It turns players into infected zombies. Even new heroes are not safe, as they are dying in droves in the starting areas.
What’s happening in WoW right now? As part of the pre-event for the upcoming WoW expansion Shadowlands, the great zombie plague has broken out. It started with contaminated items appearing in the game that first infected players.
These turned into bloodthirsty zombie monsters. They, in turn, can attack other players and NPCs and turn them into zombies as well. Therefore, the capitals Stormwind and Orgrimmar are currently being besieged by zombies, making normal gameplay often impossible.
This is what’s happening in the starting areas: The zombie plague does not spare the starting areas either, where zombies have also been sighted. There, they are conducting bloody harvests among the defenseless starter heroes who roam there.
A player reports on reddit that he couldn’t even play his brand-new hero because he was devoured by the greedy zombies during the intro cutscene. He comments on a screenshot of his hero, who was helplessly munched by the undead, with:
“Have you ever seen someone die during an intro cutscene? Yes… neither have I. Welcome to the prepatch!”
Starter heroes are no longer safe everywhere
This is how players are reacting: The reactions from readers on reddit have been quite clear. People generally complain that this zombie event often disrupts and ruins the game:
- Teelolws says, “I remember Blizzard once said that the reason why there are Alliance/Horde areas on PvP servers is that you can’t be ganked during a cutscene. How times have changed.”
- Grasswhistle28 has specific reasons why he doesn’t like the event: “This event is a huge failure for two reasons: Zombies are too weak to really raid capitals unless more people are playing zombies. The fact that you cure yourself by talking to NPCs in the cities exacerbates this. This leads to people who want to be zombies griefing in non-capital areas, where there aren’t nearly enough players to stop them. This means quest hubs are being besieged.
- Arvoleth has a creative solution: “I have a level 1 bank character in SW who gets killed by zombies every time I log in. My clever solution was to handle my mail and AH stuff in the dwarven quarter… it’s right next to the graveyard.”
These heroes are safe: However, there are places where you can safely create new heroes. When you create a character, you can also let it start in the new starting area “Exile’s Reach.” No zombies are allowed there, and you can prepare for Shadowlands in peace.
Someone who is really enjoying the event and delights in the whining of those affected is our MeinMMO house demon Cortyn. She thinks it’s great that the bright chaos has broken out in World of Warcraft and that almost no one is safe in the capitals. Such events are simply part of a living world like WoW, according to Cortyn, and everything will be over by the launch of Shadowlands.
