Blizzard has announced that it will open new, fresh servers for WoW Classic. However, there is a restriction: GDKP will be directly banned as a loot system. Blizzard has tried this before, but the community has always found ways to circumvent the bans.
What are GDKP?
- Dragon Kill Points, or simply: DKP, are a loot system in WoW. The “G” stands for “Gold.”
- Simply put, the system is a type of auction. In a raid, items are up for sale, and whoever bids the most gets the loot. In the end, the gold is distributed to all who did not receive anything.
- Since the original version of World of Warcraft, this loot method has persisted. In WoW Classic it has led to huge gold and bot problems. Blizzard eventually banned it.
This is what Blizzard says about the new realms: On November 21, “Fresh Servers” for WoW Classic will launch. They will restart the entire journey of Classic and will eventually, as with the first relaunch, transition into The Burning Crusade.
In a forum post, community manager Kaivax directly states that GDKP will be banned, at least in America and Europe. However, this may also happen in other regions later. Kaivax writes:
We understand that there are certain advantages for those who find [GDKP] a convenient way to acquire loot. We also acknowledge that there are concerns regarding GDKP, which disrupts the traditional guild and social structure […]
GDKP has already been banned in the Season of Discovery and on hardcore servers. The community manager states that the feedback has largely been positive and corresponds with internal findings. They continue to monitor the situation.
GDKP brings significant problems
After Blizzard already banned the loot system in the new versions of WoW Classic, players quickly found ways to circumvent the ban. For example, they bid with items instead of gold, which effectively amounts to the same thing.
The problem with the GDKP, according to Blizzard, is that it constitutes an ‘excellent money laundering’. Gold purchased with real money in violation of the terms of use can easily be introduced into the community without being tracked or removed.
Consequently, a feeling has emerged in the community that without purchasing gold with real money, one has no chance to keep up in any way. Because of this, Blizzard wants to take direct action on the new servers.
The main realms of WoW Classic will receive new old content: after the currently running expansion Cataclysm, it will soon continue. Mists of Pandaria is one of the most popular WoW addons, but the big reveal seems to have somewhat missed its mark: WoW brings Mists of Pandaria Classic – but absolutely no one is surprised
