Creating groups is becoming more difficult in WoW: Battle for Azeroth. Blizzard is limiting the options that interface addons can use.
Group quests in World of Warcraft can be completed with just one click. Interface addons automatically create groups for particularly challenging tasks, making it easy to find other players. However, Blizzard intends to put a stop to this. With Battle for Azeroth, addons can no longer create groups.
What’s changing? With Patch 8.0 (Battle for Azeroth), players can no longer create groups independently through addons. Players must manually fill in the name of the groups (and optionally a description). You can’t even copy descriptions into the fields using “CTRL+C” and “CTRL+V” – only direct input is still possible.
Restrictions do not apply to searching. These restrictions, however, have no effect on addons that only search for groups. This will still be possible with addons. Only the automatic creation of groups in the group finder is no longer possible.
Too much chaos as the reason for abolition? Fans speculate why Blizzard made this decision. One possibility is that the addons have led to a flood of possible groups. Those who looked in the group finder often saw hundreds or more groups for a single quest, often with only one person.
Another assumption is that the constant querying by addons has overloaded the group finder and led to performance issues. If hundreds of thousands of players continuously send automated requests to the system, this could have caused performance losses.
Completing world quests will likely take a few seconds longer in the future. There is currently no official statement from Blizzard.
