The steampunk survival game Volcanoids is currently in Early Access on Steam and now allows you to drill into the Earth’s core with friends in a 4-player co-op.
What Volcanoids is: The steampunk survival game Volcanoids was released in Early Access in January 2019 but could only be played in single-player mode at that time.
Since May 20, 2020, this has changed. Indie developer Volcanoid has released a co-op mode for up to 4 players that lets you build gigantic drills, fight robots, and explore the Earth’s depths for resources with your friends.
This is how the new co-op mode works: In multiplayer, one player acts as the host. He is essentially the crew captain and starts the co-op mode. 3 friends can then access the server and start together. However, the crew can currently only control one of the distinctive drills, also called “Drillships”. In later updates, it will be possible to obtain more.
This is the steampunk survival Volcanoids: On a deserted rocky island, a gigantic worm-like drill serves as your base. With this, you can travel through the world, set up your base, and process resources.
As is common in survival games, gathering resources is one of your main tasks. You can process them to craft equipment and upgrade the drillship.
Hostile robots will stand in your way throughout the island and underground. They use the local volcano as an energy source, which regularly erupts due to their actions and devastates the surface.
You cannot manually control the drillship itself, but you can specify fixed targets in the control room, to which the drill then takes you. The journey takes place in real-time, and you can craft items, perform maintenance, or fight off invading robots during this time.
With the gigantic drills, the drillships, Volcanoids distinguishes itself from other survival titles. The steampunk setting is also still very fresh in the survival genre. However, if you are more interested in other survival titles, check out our list of the 23 best survival games of 2020.
