The creators of Warhammer prohibit their employees from using AI. Fans say that this is only consistent. For the humanity of Warhammer 40,000, artificial intelligence is considered heresy, which is punished.
What exactly do the creators say about AI? A current financial report from Games Workshop (GW), the creators of Warhammer, reveals the company’s current position regarding AI. This includes all worlds – that is, Fantasy, Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40,000, and The Horus Heresy.
On page 4 of the report (which you can read here), there are also two paragraphs about AI. It states regarding this: “So far, no one is really excited about it.” For this reason, they have agreed on an internal policy that prohibits the use of AI.
We do not allow AI-generated content or the use of AI in our design processes or unauthorized use outside of GW, including in our competitions.

The few senior managers at Games Workshop who are familiar with AI are still allowed to engage with this technology “curiously”. At the same time, they want to protect their own intellectual property and respect human creatives.
They have even gone the other way and hired even more creatives from various disciplines – “from concept and illustration to writing and modeling to sculpting”.

How do fans react to this? They are relieved and happy, but some are surprised. Fans do not always agree with Games Workshop, and that they are doing something right here is almost remarkable, as stated on Reddit.
- “Wow, I can’t believe GW messed this up so badly—”, starts user razazaz126 to comment under a Reddit post, but turns around just in time: “Wait, what? It’s good? Well, damn, should I be amazed.”
- “I almost spat my drink out when I saw that GW unusually did not consciously choose the worst option possible,” says user Mordador on Reddit
Others point out that this decision by Games Workshop makes sense. For even though the Imperium of Man from Warhammer 40,000 is technologically very advanced, artificial intelligence is strictly prohibited there.
- “It is literally canon to ban AI. Next Level Marketing,” writes user Sjeg84 on Reddit.
AI is referred to by the Imperium as “Abominable Intelligence”. The prohibition of this is well-founded: this is to prevent a machine uprising like in Terminator. There was also such an uprising in the world of Warhammer 40,000, so the concern is not unfounded.
Meanwhile, many other companies are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence.
