The upcoming Viking game Tribes of Midgard lets you face powerful giants. The colossi regularly come to your village and smash everything to bits. So far, four of the giants are known. Furthermore, the developers explain how to ideally take them down.
What is up with the giants? In the upcoming survival MMO Tribes of Midgard the giants are special boss enemies. These primordial beings are each associated with an element and have traveled the long way from the inhospitable Jötunheim to crush your village and uproot your precious Yggdrasil sapling.
At irregular intervals, such a giant creature will visit you, and then it is essential to be well prepared. Creative Director Julian Maroda revealed to GamesRadar which giants are coming and how to fight them (via GamesRadar.com).
It is necessary to explore the map in time and take the time to forge special weapons to fight the giants. Because with normal weapons, one has hardly any chance.
These are the four giants we know so far
The following four giants can all be encountered in the game. Pay attention to which element they are associated with and make sure you have the appropriate weapons and runes to defeat them. Geirröðr – The Ice Giant
Who is this? This giant looks like a large portion of the sea suddenly froze and turned into a giant. His name means “the one who dyes the spears red”. Even an unfortunate longship is stuck inside his body. This giant also appears in the old sagas. He is notably struck down by Thor with a glowing chunk of metal.
What can Geirröðr do? The Ice Giant is slow but hits hard. Where he strikes, sharp icicles shoot up from the ground, so be careful. From a distance, the giant hurls gigantic ice blocks.
What helps against him? As the god Thor correctly noted, heat and fire work well against the giant. Therefore, equip weapons with fire damage and similar effects against him. Also, pay attention to where the giant is striking, so you don’t get pierced by the icicles.
Angrboða – Giantess of Darkness
Who is this? This giantess is the beloved of Loki and the mother of his monstrous children Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungandr. She is known as a great sorceress. Her name means “sorrow-bringer” and that seems to be her role, because when she appears, she brings darkness and dreadful monsters from her daughter’s underworld.
What can Angrboða do? As already mentioned, it is always dark around this giantess. Therefore, the Hel-things always come with her. These creatures appear every night otherwise and come here as additional adds to the boss enemy. You must dodge the magical attacks of the giantess while fighting countless monsters.
What helps against her? The element of lightning works very well against this opponent. So use appropriate weapons and effects. In addition, you can take advantage of the darkness and farm resources around Angrboða that only appear at night.
Hálogi – The Fire Giant
Who is this? This Fire Giant is basically the personification of fire. His name means “high flame” and he is one of the opponents Thor and Loki must face in the home of Útgarða-Loki according to the sagas. In mythology, Hálogi has already defeated the god Loki in a eating contest. However, even in a regular fight, this gigantic fire giant with his massive sword is a real danger.
What can he actually do? Hálogi is a force of nature in melee combat. His flaming aura damages all players in close combat. With his sword, he has a large range, and when he plants the blade into the ground, everything around it bursts into flames. He can also spit fire like a flamethrower.
What helps against him? To fight Hálogi, it is important to keep your distance or at least quickly heal if you must get close to him. Equally important: Equip the element of ice on your weapons to deal more damage to Hálogi.
Járnsaxa – The Thunder Giantess
Who is this? This giantess appears as a large (but not gigantic) woman in your village and starts smashing everything with her spear. When you attack her, she eventually turns into a massive whirlwind. Járnsaxa (the name simply means “iron dagger”) is not very well known in the sagas, but she is said to be the mother of Thor’s powerful son Magni and therefore the rival of his actual wife Sif.
What can she actually do? Járnsaxa can deal lightning strikes with her spear and is generally quite quick for a giantess. She can also throw ball lightning. So you are also not safe from her at a distance.
It gets even worse when Járnsaxa has only half of her HP left or arrives at your village. Then she turns into a gigantic storm titan and becomes infinitely more dangerous. So intercept her in the wilderness if you don’t want your village to be collateral damage.
What helps against her? The quick Járnsaxa should be attacked far from your village with weapons of darkness. They cause additional damage. Also, make sure to always keep moving, as Járnsaxa is very fast and will hardly let you live if you just stand around.
