In February 2022, a new boss was added to the Korean version of MapleStory. For a long time, it seemed impossible to defeat this boss. With 720,000,000,000,000 health points and a fight divided into several phases, the boss poses an enormous challenge even for experienced players. After 189 days, a group has finally triumphed.
What kind of game is MapleStory? MapleStory is a Korean MMORPG published by Nexon. The game world is set up like a side-scroller and implemented in 2D graphics. You can choose your character from one of 4 base classes.
The classes work like jobs in other MMORPGs. As you level up your character, you gain access to additional jobs that allow you to further specialize your play style.
What makes the boss so special? The boss named Kalos is located on the final level of Karote, the infinite tower. He guards the entrance to the sky city Odium. You need to be at least level 270 to face the boss. This is not for beginners; you must have invested a lot of time in MapleStory.
Once you have the appropriate level, you can theoretically face Kalos once every 30 minutes, but a maximum of three times a day. This limited access also contributes to the difficulty level – after all, you cannot train as often as you like.

What makes the fight so complicated?
Here are Kalos’s abilities:
- Poktan – Creates a bomb that steals 30% to 50% of your health points when it explodes.
- Laser – A laser that follows you and stuns you when you are hit.
- Juktel – Kalos becomes invisible and then attacks your group from the shadows. Causes very high damage when you are hit.
- Breathe – An area attack that causes high damage when you are hit.
In the fight, it is important to keep an eye on the various timers. You and your group also need to deal an enormous amount of damage if you want to have any chance. The combination of high health points and difficult mechanics makes this fight so challenging. No wonder it took 189 days to defeat this boss.

Is Kalos the hardest boss in MapleStory?
Not necessarily: Kalos competes with the Black Mage for the title of hardest boss. The community believes that the Black Mage has more complicated mechanics and requires just a bit more skill.
On the other hand, Kalos is a much larger damage check. At the time Kalos was released, the players’ equipment did not have correspondingly high stats, making the boss long considered unbeatable.
