Housing is popular in the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, but getting a house is difficult. For Patch 6.2, the developers announce that each player will receive their own island. It is reminiscent of Animal Crossing.
In their Live Letter on Twitch, Square Enix surprised with a housing announcement. This is solo content where you manage your own island, like in Animal Crossing. Take care of animals, build structures, gather materials, and craft new items from them.
“You get an island, you get an island, we all get an island!” they tweeted shortly after the stream.
No house, but a whole island
You can design and furnish your island as you like. You will receive items for this by purchasing, crafting, or finding them. The rest works similarly to regular houses: coloring, placing, decorating.
Harvesting is also a major aspect of the new housing system. Grow plants, harvest them, and sell them. Those who thoroughly explore their island can find seeds of rare plants and earn a lot of money from cultivation.
What’s special is that items from islands are sold with a separate currency. With this currency, you can buy items for your island.

And the houses? Many players have had their difficulties with purchasing houses recently. The problem was that most houses were only available for free companies, meaning guilds, while individuals fought over the remaining plots. Anyone wanting a house had to apply and had over 200 competitors. Decisions were made randomly.
It remains to be seen if there will soon be fewer competitors for a house because everyone is busy with their island. Those still wishing to acquire a house will likely have better chances than currently.
When does the update come? Square Enix plans to introduce the islands in late August 2022 with Patch 6.2; an exact date is not yet known. First, Patch 6.18 will come, bringing you new servers in early July, which you can move to for free.
