With a new patch, CCP Games, the developers of the MMORPG EVE Online, release trillions in ISK from ex-players. However, you must attack citadels to do this.
What does the patch enable? In the currently very successful MMORPG EVE Online, there are many abandoned citadels, gigantic space stations where massive battles are fought. Players who built these citadels have warehouses containing valuable items and ships. These warehouses are now essentially being opened.
When attacking such a citadel, it is possible to obtain items from the warehouse upon its destruction.
Why was this previously not possible? When citadels were introduced in 2016 in EVE Online, the developers of the MMORPG implemented a security feature, the asset-safety system.
This allows players to store valuable items and ships in warehouses to protect them from being lost if their citadel is destroyed. Everything that was stored was thus safe.
According to Hilmar Pétursson, head of CCP Games, the loss of ships should not always be a bad thing. Nonetheless, it causes many players to become frustrated and as a result, they make use of a griefing system. Therefore, it is important for some players to have such safety measures as the asset-safety system.
Why has this changed now? As mentioned before, there are now many abandoned citadels in EVE Online. Players who have not logged in for a long time have stored a lot of items in their warehouses. These items are worth trillions of in-game currency ISK.
To essentially bring these items back into circulation, the warehouses of abandoned citadels have now been released.
What are the implications? Pirates are now searching for and destroying abandoned citadels from ex-players. They hope to discover valuable items in the warehouses. This has created a genuine gold rush atmosphere in the MMORPG.
A corporation that searches for such citadels has found a huge warehouse containing extremely rare original Tech 2 blueprints worth trillions of ISK, equivalent to tens of thousands of US dollars using PLEX price equivalency.
Do players know their items are at risk? A player of EVE Online found a highly limited alliance tournament ship worth over 100 billion ISK during a looting. Apparently, the owner only realized his wealth was at risk when someone showcased the loot on an EVE Discord channel.
However, CCP Games sends a warning to players whose citadels are about to receive the “abandoned” status. They then have 48 hours to take countermeasures. Therefore, there are ways to save the stored items.
If you are perhaps taking a break from EVE Online and own a citadel, you should check in more often.
