In the upcoming MMO New World, housing is more than just a virtual home as a retreat. Owning a house might lead you to start a revolt.
What is special about housing? An element of New World are PvP battles, including territorial fights. This means lands change ownership from time to time when certain parties take control of them. But what happens if the land where your house stands is taken over by a hostile group?
According to Game Design Lead Mike Willitte, you keep your home. However, the new landowners may charge you higher taxes. Not just on your house but also on trades with players. This might eventually annoy you so much that you team up with other oppressed homeowners and start a revolt together.
The party that takes over an area will set the tax rates for real estate, trade, and more. If an evil group comes in and wants to raise all the taxes, you might want to consider overthrowing them. I am really excited to see what will happen when the game is played by a large group of people.

Housing is therefore not just for decoration purposes but an important part of New World. Since you can even found settlements together with other players, this can of course take on large dimensions and lead to uprisings in cities.
Houses provide buffs
What else does housing in New World offer that is interesting? Housing itself is nothing extraordinary in MMOs. Owning a house that serves as storage and retreat is almost standard in an online game that offers a persistent world.
But in New World, housing is a bit different. For example, your house grants you buffs. During your adventures, you can earn trophies. Perhaps a trophy for hunting a particularly high number of undead. If you hang these up in your house, they grant you a buff when fighting the living dead. This means when you fight zombies, you deal more damage.
However, you can only use one trophy per buff category in your house – unless you own more than one home. In total, you can manage three houses. Mike Willitte explains:
I go back to my house, hang my trophy on the wall or put it on a table, and now I have this extra buff that gives me plus-X percent damage against the undead. That’s great because I want to visit a place infested with undead. If I own more than one house, I can place one type of this buff in each house. When you reach level 60, you can stack three buffs in the same category.

What else do the trophies bring? If you see a particularly rare trophy in a friend’s house, it should motivate you to strive to obtain one as well.
Additionally, higher-tier trophies not only provide better buffs but also look more impressive. They serve as special decorations. This also aims to motivate players to collect more trophies. Being able to display special trophies in your own house leads, according to Mike Willitte, to players feeling a sense of progress in New World.
When does New World start? The MMO New World starts the Closed Beta on July 23. The release of New World will happen on August 25. So it’s not long until the official launch. To participate in the Closed Beta, you need to pre-order New World.
