Destiny 2 is celebrating the Olympic Space Games. You are to prove in competition that your class is the best in the universe. As a reward, there is an Exotic weapon and numerous cosmetics in the event – oh, and a year of lasting glory.
What is this event about? The Guardian Games (eng. Guardian Games) replace the well-known spring event from Destiny 1. They are inspired by the Olympic Games from our real world and took place for the first time in 2020. Here are the most important details:
- The 3 Guardian classes compete against each other in a sporting competition. This time, your opponents are not alien turtles, but other players.
- Warlocks, Titans, and Hunters will compete daily for gold, silver, and bronze medals.
- Depending on how well each class performs, the new loot will change and the winner will be honored for a whole year.
- The Tower and the loot are fully geared towards “sport” and always show the leading class.
- New armor, cosmetics, and even an exotic weapon and its catalyst are waiting for all players.
- Some changes from last year and new modes are meant to ensure that the competitions remain fair for everyone and exciting throughout the event duration.
Last year, Titans dominated the competition – can Warlocks and Hunters now take revenge for the humiliation they suffered? MeinMMO will show you in this article the most important mechanics such as “Laurels” and how you can win medals for your favorite class. Of course, we will also show you the event loot for which you endure all this.
To get into the mood, here is the new trailer that presents the Space Olympics in a typical Bungie fashion:
Guardian Games 2021 – All about the event in Destiny 2
The Guardian Games will start on April 20 at 7:00 PM. The event will run until May 11, lasting 3 weeks. A closing ceremony will also take place from May 7 to May 11.
Every player of Destiny 2 can participate in the Guardian Games 2021 completely free of charge. You do not need the Beyond Light expansion or the current Season Pass of the Season of the Chosen.
Visit Eva Levante in the Tower. She is your contact person for the entire Guardian Games 2021. From her, you will receive a special class item – you must wear the item to earn points for your class.
Fun dueling between Guardians doesn’t quite fit into the serious apocalyptic scenarios that are the order of the day in Destiny 2, does it? But this time, Commander Zavala is celebrating the retirement of weapons with the sporting competitions that we “negotiated” with Empress Caiatl in Season 13.
So you play in the event and earn points
How does the competition work? First, you must equip the class item from Eva Levante. Warlocks strap on the new armlet, Titans their new banner, and Hunters the competition cloak. With the item, you can complete event bounties and collect medals, as well as turn them in.
The class item changes its color daily – the first place holder wears the item in gold, the second in silver, and the third in bronze. By the way, you must equip the new items – those from last year are disqualified.
What you need to know about medals: You can collect medals every day – you store them in the new “medal box”. This way, you won’t waste inventory slots.
If you have earned the coveted medals for your achievements, you must turn them in at a podium in the Tower. Only submitted medals count for your class, so don’t sit on them for too long. Each medal is worth a different amount:
- Bronze: 1 point
- Silver: 2 points
- Gold: 5 points
- Platinum: 15 points: these medals are new. You can only earn them in the Nightfall or competitive PvP and Trials of Osiris.
- The weighting is a bit different this year, which MeinMMO will explain in its own article shortly.
This is how you see the status live: Depending on how high your class flag is flown in the Tower, you can tell which position you currently hold in the competition.
Warlocks are represented in yellow/gold in the event, Hunters in blue, and Titans in red. You can see live at the podium in the Tower which class has currently scored the most medals:
Laurels and medals in Destiny 2
You’re probably wondering how to obtain medals. It varies, you can do it through bounties and triumphs. This is where the so-called “Laurels” come into play. For a gold medal in the strike, for example, you need 100 Laurels. If you only manage to generate 50 Laurels, that would grant you silver in our example, and 20 Laurels would earn you bronze.
- You generate Laurels through ability kills during the Guardian Games: that is through Supers, grenades, and charged melee attacks.
- Imagine the Laurels as particles in Gambit that you must collect.
- If you do not collect the Laurels, they will decay – Laurels do not go to the post office.
- You can get Laurels from all classes. However, if you pick up Laurels generated by the same class as your own, you will receive bonus Laurels.
What are Candidate Cards? This year, new are Candidate Cards. You receive them from Eva in the Tower in exchange for Laurels. You can only have one Candidate Card at a time, which gives you special tasks for PvP, Gambit, or Strike. Alternatively, you can earn valuable platinum medals by completing extra-challenging tasks.
If you complete such a tough challenge, you will earn the “Allstar Status”. This brings you, for example, a platinum glow at the weekly podium ceremony.
New playlist for Guardian Games promises variety
This is the event activity: During the Guardian Games, there is a special strike playlist. Here you will be teamed up with Guardians of your class. This makes it easier to hunt for Laurels. However, there is a catch.
In the playlist, there are positive and negative modifiers that depend on how your class performed the previous day. This rewards diligent Guardians, while the other classes are given good opportunities to catch up.
These are the positive modifiers:
- Gold: Health, shields, and recovery are increased. Kinetic weapons deal more damage.
- Silver: Melee abilities charge faster. Increased elemental damage through Guardian sources. More heavy ammunition available.
- Bronze: Grenade abilities deal more damage and recharge much faster. Increased elemental damage through Guardian sources.
Here are the negative modifiers:
| Class | Modifier 1 | Modifier 2 |
| Titans | Take more melee damage | Take significantly more melee damage |
| Warlocks | Take more damage in the air | Take significantly more damage in the air |
| Hunters | Radar is disabled. | No radar and enemies do not flinch |
The class in first place from the previous day receives both negative modifiers. The second place class only has to deal with the first column’s challenges. If your class finished in last place, you are completely spared.
Sporty loot: The event rewards
By submitting medals, bounties, and triumphs, you will receive event packages. Inside, you will find new cosmetics. Additionally, you can earn the event weapon through a quest and earn a Sparrow and badges.
This is the weapon Exotic: This year, you can earn the heavy machine gun “Heir Apparent” once again. The weapon has not been available since the Guardian Games 2020 – you now have a new chance.
If you managed to obtain Heir Apparent last year, you will be excited to unlock the corresponding catalyst. The item is brand new and enhances the Exotic. The catalyst is intended to strengthen the shield function of the MG so that you can finally stomp across the battlefield like a proper Cabal colossus.
These are the new cosmetics: As announced, you will receive a new Sparrow. In addition, there are plenty of new items in the Eververse that you can use to spruce up your Guardian. This includes emotes, universal ornaments, and many cosmetics that all remind of sporting events.
It is currently unknown whether all items in the event packages are available for medals or if some are only obtainable with silver or even with real currency.
What do you think about competing against your fellow players in sporting competition? Are you already looking forward to showing everyone that Titans will win again this year, or will 2021 be the year of the Hunters or the Warlocks?
