In recent weeks, the latest episodes of Dragon Ball Daima have been airing on several streaming services. However, there have been numerous mishaps in the German translation that should not have occurred.
What are these errors? In the first 5 episodes of the anime, viewers noticed 2 significant errors that only exist in the version with German subtitles. It is not about the dubbing, which does not even exist yet, but about the subtitles of the German-language version:
- The Kaioshin mentions in episode 4 that she is quite a good fighter. However, he has always been regarded as male and has been addressed as such.
- In episode 5 of Dragon Ball Daima, Son-Goku claims he has 5 children. In reality, he only has 2 sons: Son-Gohan and Son-Goten. It’s unclear where the others are supposed to come from. Son-Goku may be a bad grandfather, but he should be able to keep track of the number of his children.
- Another error in episode 4 is unrelated to the content. Panzy says that “people would call this castle location a mafia castle.” Here, the word “location” is redundant in the sentence.
Particularly the last error can be overlooked during proofreading and is not particularly dramatic. However, the two substantive translation errors have upset fans in Germany to such an extent that they are discussing what is wrong in the Reddit forum.
Fans are wondering what went wrong during the translation of Daima
What do viewers say about it? On Reddit, the two biggest translation errors are a topic of conversation. Regarding the “fighter” issue, user Basic_Mammoth2308 explains that this must be an error. After all, the Kaioshin was referred to as a brother just a few episodes earlier, and therefore male.
The error regarding the children must also be a mistake. In the original version, Son-Goku only mentions that he is married and has children. There is no mention of a specific number. Reddit user FoxJ100 at least finds the seemingly not entirely serious explanation that Vegetto, Gotenks, and Cell would also count.
It is also noticeable that all other language versions have been accurately translated. So, this is only an error that occurs in the German-language version.
The errors in the translation do not affect the quality of Dragon Ball Daima as an anime:
What could be the reason? Since we have not yet received a statement from Crunchyroll, we can only speculate on what the reason might be. Fans on Reddit attribute it either to the translator’s carelessness or the use of Artificial Intelligence for translation. The CEO commented a few months ago that AI would be an area that the streaming service is focusing on (via CBR).
Anyone wishing to watch the new episodes of Dragon Ball Daima can do so on several streaming services. Both ADN and Crunchyroll air the episodes simultaneously with the Japanese release. Netflix lags behind by a week.
Unlike the original series, Son-Goku no longer has a tail as a child. But there is a reason for that. Akira Toriyama revealed in an interview why the tails in Saiyans no longer grow back: The creator of Dragon Ball explains why Son-Goku’s tail no longer grows back
